Hi there! I have recently purchased(I've had him 3 weeks now) a beautiful baby corn snake (Called Strider) and am wondering if anyone could answer a few basic questions.
He seems to hide away a lot and i barely get to see him (although at times he does pop his head out of his hide and watches me!) is this normal?
And because he hides away so much i havent had the chance to handle him, and i am scared of upsetting him if i try too hard. My mum says i worry too much! i think she's right! Also he has shed his skin once (That was fine!) how often should this happen? I am also worried as i have never seen him drink! AND i have seen him yawn recently (Not while feeding) is this normal, wasn't sure if snakes yawn! Is there anyone out there that can set my mind at rest? I know i probably sound neurotic but i want to make sure my snake is heathy and fine and that i am doing everything ok!! Cheers!!!!

Hi Willameesh, and welcome! Many corns, especially babies, spend alot of their time hiding. Corns are more nocturnal so yours is probably more "out and about" at night when you're sleeping. Plus, he may still be settling in. But 3 weeks has been long enough for you to have waited before starting to handle your baby. Don't be afraid to gently get him out of his hiding place to start handling. Just remember not to handle your corn for a couple of days after feeding.

Baby corns will shed about once a month, give or take, as long as they are eating well and growing well.

Your snake is, again, probably drinking when you're not looking.

And yes, corns "yawn". It is more to realign their jaws after eating, but I've seen my corns do it at other times as well.

You've come to the right place to help keep your corn happy and healthy. Don't be afraid to ask questions and definately read as many of the older posts as possible. Use the Search function to look up specific concerns. Just about everything has already been discussed many times.

Hi there and welcome to the forums! :wavey: We're all neurotic to some point about our snakes, don't feel like the lone ranger there lol. Susan has done a great job of answering your questions, so I wont reiterate, except to say that when you first start your handling sessions you might want to limit it to say 15 minutes at a time to get your snake used to being handled without stressing it too much. Work your way up from there. Almost all little ones will try to get away when you go to pick them up, but it will more than likely calm down once you get it in your hands.

They are wonderful creatures, so relax, sit back, and read (the search function is wonderful) both old and new posts. We're here to help! :)

Thank you!!

Thanks for all your help. You've really set my mind at ease. I should be ok now. will let you know how i get on!
from Willameesh!!

Hi there Willameesy,
I'm a old newbie too, ha ha. Well anyway, I like to read the search section but the archives (scroll down, bottom right) is very good spot to read some old post too. You'll be alright, you're safe here.
Good luck with your babe corn :)
