My new greenish rat has been in my care for a few weeks now. He's somewhere between 15 and 18 inches long. I've fed him twice, and he has probably pooped 15 times! Little poops. Lots of little, stinky poops.

I take the lid off his cage (sterilite) and it smells like musk. I've never smelled rat snake musk, but his cage does smell very similar to garter snake musk.
The snake seems OK. Eats fine, generally active. The snake himself doesn't really smell.

:shrugs: Should I worry?

I should add that he never musked on me. And I don't see why he would have done it in his cage on his own. Last time I cleaned the cage I gave it a wipe-down but the smell was still in his fabric leaves. A few days later its almost overpowering when stick your face in there.

Do you have cats, dogs, or other animals that ever approach his enclosure? Is he in a high-traffic area where he may be getting startled? :shrugs:
