I have always had a soft spot for all reptiles, but have never really been into corn snakes before. i have a few questions, and some of them may be a little stupid. iI notice that in front of the descriptions of most of the snakes there are numbers, such as 1.0 or 2.3-what do these mean? How do you decipher the genetic letters that are used when descibing hybrids. Also is there a good book that goes into these type of questions? I dont mean to sound green, but I am new! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

You'll find a lot of help with the 'search' feature. Most of your questions that you've asked can be found using this feature, but I'll go ahead and answer them for ya real quick :)

1.1.1= 1 male, 1 female, 1 unknown sex.

Male.Female.Unknown

Get the 'bible'. The Corn Snake Manual by Kathy Love. That's your homework lesson #1. I believe her new edition is out. You can order it from www.cornutopia.com.

I dont follow your question in regards to the letters for the hybrids. Perhaps if you can word that a bit clearer we can help.

Again, welcome!

In a given collection or morph....

X.Y.Z = X males, Y females, Z gender yet unknown

As for the "genetic letters when describing hybrids", I'm not sure what you mean. Are you referring to the "genotype" mapping of dominant/recessive genes when describing a particular morph?

As for general husbandry, Kathy Love's The Corn Snake Manual is considered to be the "must have" book. If you're looking for a book describing current morphs and genetics, Chuck "Serpwidgets" Pritzl's Corn Snake Morph Guide is what you want.

Since my less-than-esteemed colleagues have already fallen all over themselves trying to be the first one to answer the door, I shan't restate what has already been stated. :rolleyes:

Since my less-than-esteemed .....

First off, jeepfather, welcome to the forums.

Secondly, you'll come to understand that CAV has enough esteem around here to feed a horse.

Matter of fact, most of us here think of him as a horse's esteem.
