HUGE thanks to Russell and his connections. Just picked up the following two hoggies from him at noon today. Had these in mind all summer long, debated with myself on and off, finally decided to pay Russell the day I got my Ambers, and then waited patiently while he made his connections for me . . .

WOW! I could not be happier. Not only are they an unrelated pair, they were reasonably priced, and the female is nice and yellow! As it turns out, I was lucky to have been able to make the hour drive to retrieve them today . . . sounds like I risked Russell trying to keep them for himself! :crazy02:

(Oh, and while taking pictures, I was quickly introduced to the 'nastiness' they have . . . sounded like a car tire with a hole in it! I can't wait to experience the feeding response!)

They are gorgeous! Best of luck with getting them to feed. My pathetic little hisser will only take live for me... I gave in after 37 days of hunger strike!

Dayum Tula you are too fast. I was just getting ready to PM you cause I thought you'd be interested in seeing them . . . :eek1:

I'm pretty sure they've been eating f/t, but I've had f/t eating corns change to prekilled or live on me before. Either way, I am really looking forward to seeing that feeding response!

What a description.. Seems to me I have came across a Sonoran Gopher snake a time or two that made that same sound.. Nice snag.. Are they the eastern or western ones? * I don't know much about Hoggies at all, so if that was a dumd question lemme know 'eh! *

When I first got mine, he was an excellent feeder... eating at least 2 pinks every 5 days or so for months. Then he just stopped! No signs of shed either. (BTW They take an eternity to shed).

I tried every trick in the book with him then finally gave in to live which he never hesitated over. Now all my current pinks have gotten too big he will have to wait another 2 weeks or so to have another meal. Im just glad he has something in him. If you need any tips I know a few that have worked with others but not for myself. PM me anytime.

The are a lovely little pair btw. My boy has a girlfriend too but she lives with a friend atm :p

These are apparently locality Western Hognose from Minnesota. They were captive bred and raised, but down the line somewhere they were wild caught from Minnesota. :shrugs: Hopefully when Russel catches wind of the thread he can add some more information on that end. I honestly just wanted a hoggie or two as I was intriqued by them from some of the posts made around here . . . guess that's a back handed way of thanking Rich for the General Chit Chat area where we can discuss things other than corns!

hoggies...

Hognose...I love hognose..but temporarily don't have any. Well I get the word that Brent would like some hognose. So I'm like, well my buddy ol pal John Meltzer can get you a pair...

And last week John's telling me, the female is turning a gorgeous yellow, the most yellow he's seen in hognose! The pics shown do NOT do her justice in my opinion! Anyhow, before I could think of some devious plan and talk John into going into this plan with me, Brent showed up. Oh well. Good thing he missed out a bit on a silly football game to pick those two up. Or I would have sent him a refund on his money and kept them myself! LOL! Enjoy Brent!

John Meltzer has been studying hognose as much as possible since the seventies. And yes, catches them local to where he lives. Just last week he was out herping and caught a couple. Both released. He has over time kept some and now breeds a couple diff locality western hognose. They always sell out fast for him. Very neat snakes indeed!

And maybe next year I'll have to get another hisser in the house. Just for a pet...
