Odd Shedding Thing?

Em Wright

The Ice Queen
I noticed something a bit odd today. Mali's last shed was on a Sunday and then today (which is a Sunday) she shed again. Unfortunately her first shed was on a Monday or else I'd be a little freaked out. :p

Has anyone else noticed anything like this with their own snakes?

Oh and my fiance measured her the shedded skin. It's roughly 16-17 inches long. I'm gonna have to pull out her last skin and measure it to see if she's put on inches. I really think she has; I can tell she's grown a bit over the last few weeks. :D

I'm always happy when they shed, since that means they're growing and healthy. You might be able to get an idea about growth rate by measuring sheds, but remember that the shed skin is longer than the snake. I've read that it can be as much as 40% longer! The extra length is accounted for in a couple of ways. First, the area that's between and under the edges of the scales is stretched out and part of the shed's length. Secondly, as the snake wriggles out of the old skin, the skin stretches. The amount of "stretch" is probably different each with each shed, depending upon what the snake starts its shed on, humidity, temperature, and other factors.

You can still use the increased length of sheds as proof of growth. Just be aware that the inches don't automatically convert to actual length of snake. :)

Oh I don't use the shedded skin as proof of growth, I can tell by looking at her that she's bigger. ;) I tend to mark her growth by weighing her and if I decided to get an accurate (or near accurate as she's not exactly thrilled with being made to hold still unless it's her idea) length I'll measure the snake. ;)

Mostly I thought it was kooky that she shed on the same day twice and if anyone else had noticed it with their snakes. :shrugs:

My snakes, in the admittedly short time I've had them, always seem to surprise me with their sheds. Both my new snakes have shed since I got them a month ago, one did it during the settling in period, and the other did it without me knowing when, because the shed stuck inside a hide. My larger snake goes into a more pronounced pink before shedding, but it still manages to surprise me!

Peaches' last two sheds were both on the 16th, if thats what you mean. This month she is a bit late, but i thought it coincidence that she shed on the same day anyways.

I saw Mali's sheds coming, I can always tell when she's in blue, which is nice. :D Her first shed here with me was 8/10 (a Sunday) and then today 9/21 which is also a Sunday. Sorry, what I was saying wasn't making much sense. :awcrap:

A coincidence, but humorous when such things happen, nonetheless. :D

I agree. I have noticed that both of mine go into shed within days of each other, for the last couple sheds. Probably coincidence again, but interesting that they are synced up.
