offensive?

Geez, if being called a freshman was the least of my problems I'd be all set. The things people find to complain about, it amazes me.

It seems like there is such a backlash against being "PC" these days, well to me people being annoyed by some women not wanting to be called freshmen, seem just as silly to me as the women themselves. Me, I would rather this than nobody ever having the guts to speak out against something if they find it unfair.
Women's rights have come a long way but there is still a lot of fighting to do before our gender is treated equally. Until then I would rather be amused by someone taking on a windmill or two than never see anybody mustering the guts to speak out or fight against inequality. I am far more annoyed by complacent women who let themselves be pushed around than I am by bitter screeching ones with a cause...

Jen, you know that stereotype exist for a reason. Maybe I see it more than some people because of all the years I have had to deal with the public, but it is out there! I don't like complacent women who allow themselves to be pushed around either but those bitter screeching ones really need to learn to pick their battles. How can the issue of REAL women's/human rights be taken seriously when these women have their panties in a bunch over a simple word that was never designed to hurt anyone?
 
I have a job where I deal with the public every day as well but my take is different. I feel sorry for people that are bitter but I don't lump them all together and give them a label. Life makes us what we are. In getting to know a few people better than my first impression there can be many reasons for someone to act that way and some are very valid ones.
I am just a strong believer in Women's equality. I also read the whole article it is not just the word freshman they are changing some others that totally make sense to me. And I failed to see any group of bitter women screeching in that article because it was about the decision made by WA lawmakers not about a protest. Bitter screeching women were not in there it doesn't say anything about them. I don't disagree a bit that Journeyman in the trades gets changed to journey level. It's the 21st century you don't have to be a man to be a plumber, electrician or whatever. But you will probably be paid less than your male counterpart because it still isn't equal, I work in a male dominated industry and I see and hear things every day that tell me how long we still have to go before we are considered as good as men. and until we are, screech on bitter ladies and more power to you.

Hell, I'm as bitter as they come, and I can screech with the best of them, but I am also a firm beliver in picking my battles.
There are fights worth having, sure, but screeching about the foolish stuff only makes your side look bad.

There was a pretty big movement to change the name to people bugs a while back. They are technically lady bird beetles, but I guess the lady part is still pretty offensive to zero percent of everyone ever.

Oh geez. It just now occurred to me what the whole thing was about. Freshmen. I thought it was the term itself they were objecting to, and I thought, why???
 
Since it is an equality issue shouldn't they be as equally offended at being called woMEM? Perhaps wohomosapien would be a welcomed change. And terms like woMENs rights. Maybe wobeing rights?
 
Where are the women being offended in the original article you linked? I missed where it mentioned anybody's action leading to the WA state legislators changing the language, it seems like they are doing it more pre-emptively than as a reaction to anyone complaining, maybe to cover themselves from future complaints or lawsuits or something?
 
Washington State is like that though. I live in the Pac NW so I am kinda used to this kind of thing. Also it says other states have changed the language in a similar way (Florida, North Carolina and Illinois)

Citizen means a resident who is not a subject to me, quite the opposite of offensive.
 
At this rate, nobody is going to be able to say anything without being accused of offending somebody. I understand that some words/phrases are offensive and shouldn't be used, but "citizen"? Really?
 
This whole thing reminds me of that line in Legally Blonde where the stereotypical overly feminist woman wanted to change the term "semester" to "ovester", because "semester" is obviously a reference to semen.
