Hey everyone! Im really freaking out... gandolf the oldest of all my corns has been acting strange!!! Hes been yawing all the time making weird head movements and wierd tongue movements as well as sneezing a lot!! Someone please help! I dont know whats wrong! 1 week ago someone turned the plug for the UTH off while they were fixing the back of the tv and when i took him out he was FREEZING!! He had this weird swelling from his throat and i checked his mouth just incase he had something inside but there was nothing... no bleeding nothing.... someone please help!! What should i do??? There is definitely something wrong with him!

Those sounds like classic symptoms of an RI. How long did he go without heat? I doubt if it was only for a few hours it would have been a problem but if it was days with no heat source he may be starting to develop some kind of upper respiratory infection.

The best thing to do for now would be to crank up his heat a bit and leave him be... Just monitor him for the next few days.

ok... i will higher the temps... i think he was without heat for a couple of days... I feel so horrible! I hope he gets well soon!!!

Is there anything oozing from his mouth or nostrils? If not, he's probably ok. Such symptoms without discharge also signify impending shed. Get your heat right and keep a close eye on him for a few days. If you see any sort of discharge, or if he doens't shed with the next several days, you can take him to a vet for a check up. One more thing, a snake is supposed to feel cold, since they are usualy colder than our hands are.

Well even with out heat from and UTH the temps would only drop as low as the room temps. Seventy or something right!. So thinking out loud here I think temps aren't the main problem. What are the temps anyway??
Could be dry shin from a shed. Could be.. :shrugs:
How the cage, substrate. Clean..dry..?? That could be an issue.
When did you last feed compare to the UTH being off?
But the swelling near the throat?? I have no idea. Sorry.
Hope someone else chime in for your.
Good Luck.

Your right on the mark in suspecting a shed. Although I have never seen this in corns, my boas sometimes got very "puffy" around the throat and chin area. Always in the shedding prepartion process.

2 days isn't that long without heat... If it is the start of an RI, there had to be previous conditions that would allow this develop. ie like Lenny said wet/damp/unclean/dirty substrate, low temperatures, or general bad husbandry - But I highly doubt the last part.

Remember corns only have one operational lung, so any suspected respiratory problems MUST be dealt with asap. A few days on higher heat and good observation will confirm any illness - If you are still unsure, get him to a reputable reptile vet :) Best of luck!

Thanks for your responses guys! I appreciate it!! Well I just cleaned the cage and changed the substrate a week before i found out about the UTH being unplugged and i fed him the same day i found out about the UTH because that was feeding time... he ate like a charm... didnt have any problems... the substrate is dry no access water or spills anywhere.... temps are around 78 to 80.... it gets pretty cold in my house at nights it hits anywhere from 62 to 69 so when i picked him up that day he was like a frozen popsicle... there is nothing oozing or coming out of his mouth or nostrils... i hope this info helps...

80 may be a little cold especially if the room temp doesnt get into the mid 70's. Maybe try using a space heater to get the room temp up to 75 OR just raise the UTH temp to 85.

From the sounds of it he may be slightly chilly ;)

I think your snake will be OK.
But the timing of the events?? A week ago you feed him and found the UTH off. He was freezing then? If so , you turn up the heat and he digesting should be fine. but if he still adjusting is jaw..strange. Is he due for a shed. That my thinking, but keep the temps up for a week and see if it clears up. :)

Ok thanks guys... ill higher the temps and see what happens... He hasent shed for a month or two so it might be time for him to shed but i really cant tell... we'll see what happends in the next couple of days!! Once again thanks for all your help!! :)

My corns do get puffy around their throats when they are in shed. This is due to fluid building up between the old skin and the new skin. It is not always noticable though.

It is really noticable with my king, though. That's what made me think shed right away.

Is it not because of fluid stuck in the lymphatic system? That is what I read. Anyway, I do see it in my blue beauty very well, also in my yellow ratsnake but only my butter corn lady shows a swollen throat before getting blue.
