Opinions...Moving up from Pinkies to Fuzzies.

I just want to make sure I am doing this right.

Our snake is 7 months old and a little over 15" and 16g. I JUST got a scale so I don't know how fast he was growing before. I know in Feb or March, he was 13 inches long. We feed him one pinky every 5 days. So he's a sloooow grower compared to other snakes on here. lol He has never had any problems shedding, eating or keeping things down. Pretty happy and healthy and also eats while in blue just fine.

He ate one pinky two days ago...Bump was hardly noticeable and gone after 12 hours. I had not fed him the last two meals because I was away from home so no way to notice then.

I did buy some fuzzies and they are a little on the big side, but maybe not? Half the house says they are 1.5 X the size of the snake and the other half says it's a little bit bigger then that. LOL

I know from reading a lot of posts on here that it's time to double up on pinkies before I move up to fuzzies. My question: Is it a good idea to feed one and a half pinkies before I move to two? Or should I just stop freaking out and know this is not rocket science and he can handle 2 full size pinkies?

Sounds like it's time to move up! There wouldn't be any harm in starting him off with 1 1/2. And if you think after that's been eaten he could take the other half, go ahead and give it to him. According to the Munson plan, 16grams is when they start on double pinks. But this of course is only a guideline and doesn't apply the exact same way to every snake. Good luck!

If you have a lot of pinkies then your snake would easily eat two to four every five days or so. There is not much to a pinkie and they digest fast. I'm sure it could also eat fuzzies also, probably two at a time. It won't hurt anything to try. The sooner you get the snake to larger mice the more nutritional value they have and your snake will grow faster.

My 16g snakes all eat 2 pinks no problem, I'd go straight to 2. If he takes them easy move up to fuzzies. Unless you have only the one snake then just feed two or three till they are gone. :D

What size/weight are the pinks you are feeding him? My 26 gram Nautley gets two large pinks still, which total up to 4 or 5 grams of prey item. If you're feeding day-olds, or small pinks, you might be feeding a total of only 2 grams of prey.

I have six (very small) pinkies and three (About the size of 4 pinkies) fuzzies, all frozen so not worried about getting rid of any and I can always get more. I get them at Petco (Hate that place) and don't they have a size in between??!! They should! I wish there was a better place closer. Some of the pet stores around here are grosser then gross. I do not trust them!

I definitely do not see him eating two fuzzies at a time...they are too big. But I think I am going to go to one and a half pinkies, then maybe the other half if he does not look that full. Then two the next meal and then we will see? We looked again and the fuzzies seem to me about 2 x the size of the snake!

I want to go the safest route possible. Someday, I hope to be as brave as you Dickdeuel! LOL I am sure they can handle it!

Oh and reading my post again...just in case...I meant that someone else fed him his last two meals, just not me because I was not at home. LOL He's been fed every 5 days since we got him.

He surely ain't large for a 7 month old corn. I never use their weight for size of prey reference, just the snakes size halfway their body. I had to feed some pinky's almost twice the size of their girths to some hatchlings yesterday, just because there were no smaller ones in my bag of pinky's anymore and they are quite small. They did just fine. Usually I'm more worried that their head is too small to be able to eat a certain size of prey, but since hatchlings tend to have larger heads relatively, I dare to feed them larger prey's then 1,5 times their girth.

Yeah, he is pretty small. I am hoping that he will take his time growing. I don't like the pinhead look! But I think we are doing a pretty good job, he's not boney by far and he's very strong. He's shed 4 times since we got him.

The size of the pinkies...Not sure. I just got the scale yesterday, so I was going to weigh them on Tuesday, when he eats next.

My Nimue is a very slow grower as well. There is a progression thread for her on site; I think it is under Nimue, if you want to take a look and compare sizes. I still feed her two pinks every five days unless she is blue (she just wont eat then). Nimue is a yearling and she is a tiny little spitfire. I am worried that it is taking her so long to grow even though she attacks her food; she even struck my finger once in her zeal.

My newest corn is Oberon, a younger '09, but is almost twice as long and thicker. I think some snakes take their time to grow, maybe we should try one of those calcium powders I've seen online to get some weight on these slims.

I can't find your other post. When was your snake born and how big is it now?

I have read that giving snakes vitamins and minerals can be deadly for them because of how they hold onto them longer.

I don't mind my slow grower, as long as he is healthy, I'm not so worried. :) Feeding day is tomorrow...I can't wait to see how he does!

So, we went ahead and fed two pinkies. The first one went down so fast that we were like, ok...we will just feed the other one whole! LOL Both went down just fine! Now he's just hanging out in his warm hide with a temp of 83 like he normally does after being fed.
