So...I have put considerable thought into the name I would like my new business to have. I want it to be catchy and descriptive, all at the same time. So, without further ado... What do you guys(and gals) think?

Getulas & Gutattas: Captive Bred Colubrids

Don't be gentle...I'm a big boy, and if I couldn't take constructive criticisms, I wouldn't have asked for it. I respect the opinions of all the members here, and I really appreciate all insight.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the input. I think I'm gonna run with it. I figure with a picture of a corn and a king as the "logo", it should be enticing...

Very good name! And you can have fun with a logo...the "G" in each name could be an example of each species.

I love the way those two words go together.

I think I like it better Getulas/Gutattas (without the "and" breaking it up).

I like the name, but I know what the terms "gutattus" and "getulas" mean. There are people who already own corns and/or kings who don't know these terms (or "colubrid" either, for that matter). And in terms of a web search, the name may not serve you well if you give it to a website either. :shrugs:

People are going to think you're two Greek cousins who are breeding fish. :grin01:

My first thought was also that a lot of my beginner customers would not have any idea what it means. But if you are only going to market to people already in the hobby, that wouldn't be a problem.

In order to make it distinctive, maybe you could line up the names like:

Getulas &
Guttatas

and then not only do something with the G in each name, but also the first T in each, since they line up too. Maybe even one long snake design that was composed of both Ts, made into one snake (going through both names). A somewhat stylized snake(s) might be better than a realistic one. Maybe one that looked like a definite king on the top part, but changed into a corn as it went through the second name. Maybe an artist could work up some ideas for you.

I think the ampersand (&) is better than the word "and". If you really want to get cute, you could just say Gets & Gutts, lol! Along with a little clarification slogan below it, of course. In either case, if you use something that may not be totally clear to everyone (such as a genus name), then I think your slogan / clarification should not use a word like colubrid, which also may not be known to some. Maybe "captive bred kings and corns", or "colorful corns, and ______ kings", or something descriptive like that would be easier for everyone to understand.

Speaking as one of the "newbies" in the world of corns I had a hard time with the name. It's hard to pronounce for someone who isn't familiar with scientific names and equally hard to remember how to spell.
If some one was searching for "corn snake breeder" there is a good chance your site wouldn't hit. If you are looking to market to the general public then maybe a less "latin" name would be better.

This can be a tough decission, I say go with what YOU like.

When I was more active and doing shows, I had to come up with a name to put on some type of banner. I came up with a bunch of names but nothing really fit. So when crunch time came, I just put "Clint's Corns" on the banner for lack of a better name. Still to this day when I walk the isles at a show, people will call me by name and stop to talk about a snake they bought years ago.

I guess this just shows that if you keep it simple and to the point, people will remember.

I like it, but as others have said, I think it may be confusing for some people, and not necessarily just the absolutely new snake keepers. I also found it not too easy on the pronunciation... I had to read it a couple of times before I could get my tongue round it. But maybe that's just me.

These are just my opinions of course. Whatever you decide, it's your choice. :wavey:

Maybe it's easier when you sing it to the tune of the Laverne and Shirley theme song:

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Getulas, Gutattas, hasenfeffer incorporated.

(Sorry, it's stuck in my head...)

I understand what you're saying...but I didn't have that issue. In my mind it is almost "sing/song" how it rolls off the tongue...but I need to try and see it from a customer's POV.

How 'bout this:

Getulas & Gutattas:
Captive Bred Snakes

And have a picture of a king and a corn. Would that be more clear? I also hope to be able to spark someone's curiosity, and invite questions...

I like Kathy's idea . . . How about:

Gets & Gutts:
Captive Bred Colubrids
or simpler . . .

Kings & Corns:
Captive Bred Colubrids
