Our foster snow corn hatchlings

LauRuffian

Perpetual Newbie
Poor babies! I saw these pathetic girls at the store where we sell our babies and offered to take them home and put weight on them. They weren't eating at all and are half the size of their amel clutchmates, still in the store. They are a pitiful 5 grams--the hatchweight of my smallest babies this year, who have nearly doubled that on their little frames.

After handling my little guys and then switching over to these, it was horrifyingly evident how weak they are. But great news! I got them both to take a pinkie last night.

I normally don't weight directly on the scale as my "kids" won't stay anywhere near still enough to get a reading. These weak little things didn't have the strength to scurry away or explore. :(

I look forward to posting progress pics as these little ladies perk up. :)

Ha! I published the same picture twice.
Here is Baby #1 and her full belly. :)

Also, I'm correct that both of these girls are snows with a normal pattern, yes? (They both have belly checks.)

Yayys for the 'fostering' and getting them to eat.. Any idea why they weren't eating at the store?

This may sound dumb, but how do you tell a newly hatched (or only a week? or so old) amel from a snow? I saw a newly hatched clutch recently and was told the pink ones were amels (they certainly have the amel gene) but they really did not seem to have much 'red' they look a LOT like the snow pics here.. I've tried some online searches (Ian's vivarium has some good pics) and I'm just wondering.

Amels will look more orangish and have a bit of color. If it's white and pink? It's a snow. If you have both side by side it's rather easy to tell.

Nancyg, I'm not sure why they weren't eating in the store. I don't know their history from their breeder, so I don't know if they truly made sure they were eating well before selling them. It might just be that they are like one of my babies from this year who is too shy to eat under normal circumstances--he needs it dark, quiet, and his deli cup covered. IIRC, the store owner feeds live pinkies, so maybe that intimidated them. Or, maybe they don't like human scent on their food. Who knows, you know? :/

I shipped my last baby today (a robust amel), and took that as an opportunity to photograph how different these babies are. :( My amel is YOUNGER than these girls--their healthily eating siblings are actually larger than my boy--but...well, wow.

This photo really highlights just how poor their condition is. :(

I aim to try and feed again in two days. In the meantime, Snowball says, "I have a Lego house and youuuuu donnnnn't."

It's been 4 days and the scrawny snakelings are getting active, so I thought I'd try feeding again.

Sunrise: Success! She went straight for her boiled pinkie and immediately started swallowing, even before I covered her deli cup to give her privacy.

OM NOM NOM

Nice happy full belly yet again

Unfortunately, Snowball showed NO interest. I may try again tonight when it's completely dark and quiet (that's when she ate last time), or I may wait another day or two, which probably makes more sense...I'm just impatient to get weight on them.

Whoo hoo! After waiting 48 hours, Snowball ate last night. :D

It took him a long time to digest his first meal--it took him about 6 days to poop it out. I think that's why he refused the second meal initially. But he ate readily yesterday, so...YAY!

Also, both appear quite clearly to be boys. Popping is a new skill of mine, but it seems quite apparent that if they got 'em, they got 'em. ;) And how funny is this--someone who bought one of my females from this year's clutch already wants one for future breeding. Obviously, they need more time, but cool that someone already wants to take them in.

And it's done! Both babies have gained weight with me, are eating readily (with f/t pinkies heated up the conventional way), and are happy and active. I returned one to the pet store who loaned them to me, and the grateful store owner gave the second one to me (he also comped me the crickets for our frogs, rat for our python, and knocked $5 off an UTH I bought for a Craigslist rescue). I just sold the baby the store owner gave us yesterday to a fellow Boy Scout in my son's pack, so we'll get regular updates. :)

Yay for happy endings!

How about some before and afters? Those are always fun. :)

Both babies were barely 5g when I brought them home. So glad to see them healthy. :D
