I am new to the world of corn snakes and have to say I am totally addicted. I see alot of threads of "predicted outcomes" and would love to know where I can find out about the genetic traits just for my own curiosity.

I have 1:0 ghost, 0:1 pink snow, 0:1 opal, 0:1 albino stripe that will definately be ready next season to breed. I would love some guidence to know if 1 male can service 3 females, personally I think it may be too much but I'd rather ask the experts.

Secondly I really would appreciate any ideas on "possible" outcomes from any of these pairings.

I understand that not knowing the breeding of these animals may throw anything into the pot, but assuming they have no hets. I am NOT doing this to make money from them, I simply have them because I like them and would be more than willing to house 100 offspring should I go that crazy.

Ghost x Snow = 100% Anery, het amel and hypo

Ghost x Opal= 100% normals, het lavender, anery, amel, hypo

Ghost x Amel Stripe= 100% normals, het amel, anery, hypo, stripe

First off...let me say Welcome to the addiction!!! :D

If he is kept healthy and of good size, one male can easily service 3 females. For assurance with fertility though, I would do more than just one breeding with each female.

From those crosses, here are your outcomes (assuming there are no hidden hets):
ghost X pink snow will yield all anerys het amel and hypo
ghost X opal will yield normals het anery, hypo, amel, and lavender
ghost X amel stripe will yield normals het amel, hypo, anery, and stripe

With those babies, you have alot of possibilities if you kept them and bred them to each other.

edit: grrr....don't type fast enough....

no I hit the wrong button and had to type it again....hush hun. Besides, mine was more thorough... :p

You're asking for it sweetheart.... :madeuce:

Oh please, I deal with Susan all the time---you think a little threat from you has me quaking in my boots? ;)

yeah but Susan is a sweetheart...I don't think I could even take her threats seriously...even when she pulls out that vulture lol we should stop taking up thread space...hope we ALL answered your questions graffix :)

Thanx to everyone, as to answering my question, yes and no. well, I got the answer to my question, now my homework is to try to figure out why "ghost X stripe does not = striped ghost"
Thank you again to all for the help.

The quick answer would be because the "normal" trait is dominant over the other traits, so UNLESS the ghost is het for stripe or the stripe is het for hypo and anery(meaning it carries the genes recessively), you will not see any striped ghosts in your clutch of babies. But, you will see striped ghosts in the F2(second generation), if you breed the babies back to each other.

Serpwidgets has written a VERY thorough and easy to understand book on cornsnake genetics that I'd like to recommend: http://cornguide.com/the guide.htm

Great book and VERY affordable. I highly recommend it!

(the book is ordered)
Now here I go again, I probably should have started a new thread but.....
Isn't it dangerous (genetically) to F2 breed direct siblings?

(sheesh, now I do need to go lay down)

Can I suggest you buy a male amel het lavender stripe and breed it to the opal and amel stripe, you'll have the best sellable outcome that way. Your quad het babies from a ghost x opal pairing might be great if someone wants to wait a few years to cross them...or wait 5 years til they become really productive...but I say it's easier to offload animals that are homo for at least 1 trait rather than multi-hets.

I know it's not all about selling....but it gets tiresome keeping 30 normals around that have a goldmine of hets but noone is interested in taking them for a worthwhile rate.

I have a couple of lovely aztec normals this year that are only getting a so-so response on the market but my anery motlies have been really popular.

Also, if you sell to a broker or pet shop, they're not at all interested in hets, they just want an animal that looks good in the window and gets sold fast.

Thanks for the heads up Princess, and you are right, it's not about the money, I have these animals for no other reason than I like them. I am amazed at the variety of morphs in corns, recently coming to America from Australia, "finding" this has been mind blowing. My curiosity is driving me deeper into trying to figure this gene thingy out to a point where I can produce some cute lil' buggers myself. To me, that's what this is about.

I've never heard of one before but hey, anything is possible ..... right ?

Sure, but even IF you could find one, the price tag would be pretty high. I'd assume at least a few hundred, if not more.

No Probs there, were talking snakes after all ............. anyone want to buy a kid ??? Only a few hundred bucks, or so :p

jk

To find something like that I'd assume you'd have to talk to either Rich, Don, Joe P, Stephen, Stephen Roylance, etc.
