I recommend going back in asap and taking pictures. The corporate office won't be able to back up the store if you have proof of the conditions. Camera phone and a bit of stealth might be a better idea than casually snapping pictures with your camera. :)

Good job for standing up to them.

This is how PetCo cares for their snakes around here.

But what REALLY cracks me up is Petsmart, where they put, oh, I don't know... a half a dozen, maybe more, of their kingsnakes all in one tank. Nice. Real nice. Morons. :angry01:

I used to work at Petsmart, from 1999 through I guess 2002. Started when I was a senior in HS. Like someone else said, customers would come LOOKING for me because I actually knew what the hell I was doing as opposed to just quoting company care sheets that may or may not be correct.

At this point in my life, I basically have no respect left for the average chain store employee. I am pretty sure I know more than all but a few of them, so I don't bother to ask. A few months ago, I was picking up a turquoise severum and a clown loach (fish, for those of you wondering) at a Petsmart and the teenager dipping them for me told me "You know you cannot keep these in the same tank, right?" I said "Really why is that?" She then pointed to the labels on their tanks which indicated that clown loaches are semi-aggressive (the severums, who are cichlids and therefore inherently aggressive had no label) and said "You cannot keep semi-aggressive fish with other fish. They will hurt each other."

:laugh01: Now I don't know if any of you have seen a clown loach, but they are bottom feeders with downturned mouths and not a hint of aggression in their bones. They love each other, they love other fish. In any event, I said "It'll be fine, just bag them for me, please?" She did so, looking unhappy that I did not take her advice.

Six months later, I've got a happy Sev and a happy clown loach. Shocking, isn't it?

I have a running thread on craigslist here that I refresh about every week or two offering help or guidance to help for snakes and lizards and can't tell you how many horror stories I have heard. my local petland here in Orlando closed and the petco by me does ok with their animals except that all of there terrariums are at the same temps as they are all connected via the ventilation holes. This being said, they have their BP's, Bearded dragons, russian tortoise and corns all with the same humidity and temps. The one employee there who owns a good number of herps personally and I both talked to the manager and i got the drift that she had complained before, but nothing gets done.

I hate the big chain stores because its all corp. BS and profit before properly caring for their animals. I'd volunteer time there to help them get on track in a cost effective manner and I'm sure the young lady working for them would too but we all know that wont happen.

as for email help horror stories, get this: I get an email from a guy with a columbian RTB he says he used soil and eco-earth as recommended by his local petsmart for his 129.99 dollar RTB that is only a few months old with no special genetics. he said he spent about $350 getting everything the recommended and now his snake is making a soft crackling/popping noise when breathing. He looked online and found about soil not being so great so he cleaned the cage and switched to aspen. In the process of doing this he noticed a white siliva like substance in the snakes nostrals and then saw my post and contacted me. I gave him the name/number/address for the vets office I go to who has a vet on staff that specializes in herps. He now has an appointment for this week to see the vet about a possible respiratory infection.

I wonder just how many animal deaths/illnesses have been cause by the big chains like petsmart, petco, and petland???

"I wonder just how many animal deaths/illnesses have been cause by the big chains like petsmart, petco, and petland???"

I'd say too many to count. You're right. All these big pet chains care about is making money and feeding the masses a steamy pile of *beep* to go with their purchases. It's terrible. I wish that the only way you could buy a pet is by going to an expo, where only reputable breeders are allowed to sell.

I wouldn't even bother buying a snake from a pet shop. I buy all my reptiles at reptile expos where I have a face to face conversation with the very person who produced the animal. You generally get MUCH better prices at expos anyway.

I think what people need is education when it comes to pets, especially people who have chosen to own or work at pet shops! I mean, come on! Why are you gonna work at a pet shop and not want to learn about how to take care of the pets you're selling? You can still make money, but educate people about the animal they are about to purchase and make sure it's the right choice for them. Plus, if the shop you work in takes excellent care of the animals and educates the customers on how to do the same, everyone comes out happier.
