i must say that im with princess, even though Prellas is new to snakes, whats the point of sugar coating something so that it sounds nice when it means the same thing in the end. however, there is no need to go crazy defending Prellas by attacking each other in polite manners if she herself isnt being deffensive.

I don't mean to rant, but ARE YOU MENTALLY DEFICIENT??

WHAT ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH ARE YOU THINKING BY POSTING THIS GARBAGE?

I'd have to disagree. It's not about "sugar coating something so that it sounds nice" - it's about basic civility.

You can say things in MANY ways, no doubt; but HOW you say it - especially in as incomplete a communication medium as the 'net is - makes a world of difference as to how it's received, processed, and taken to heart.

Obviously, my prior post was meant to be contrasted to this one. Which did you prefer to read? :)

however, there is no need to go crazy defending Prellas by attacking each other in polite manners if she herself isnt being deffensive
I'm not defending Prellas; I'm defending the process, as it were.

jazz

Wow...great uhh....wacky thread. Prellas welcome! Wonderful looking snake you have there! I'm also expecting one of my mice to have a buncha babies soon....she looks like a softball....

Lol...sorry, obviously with some people its easy to get off topic quick...

Thanks o_O I wasn't expecting my 4th? Post to go this way but I guess weird things happen eh? I want to say I've chatted with alot of you in the CS room and you have offered me alot of advice and I feel as though I am more educated now then before. Thank you :)

i just believe in telling people what i think and being as honest as possible, as i like others to be with me. this way, what you say recieves much more attention and others will take it into consideration, rather then dissregard it as a complement. im sure that many people who saw those pictures thought most of what princess wrote, but preffered not to say it because they knew others may not approve.
all i want to say is, get a smaller mouse, enjoy the wonderful world of corns, and if you have any questions i would be glad to give you my personal advice on the matter.

As do I. You do see that I said the same thing in two different ways, correct?

Civility has nothing to do with telling "white lies" - to the contrary, it's pure honesty coupled with what most would call "the golden rule".

this way, what you say recieves much more attention and others will take it into consideration, rather then dissregard it as a complement.
I disagree. Cynically, the whole advertising industry is geared to bringing as much attention as possible to the product or service being advertised....and not many of us would consider ads to be completely "honest".

IMO, "flamers" bring more attention to themselves than their message, yet few will take what they say into consideration....for the simple fact of how they say it.

im sure that many people who saw those pictures thought most of what princess wrote, but preffered not to say it because they knew others may not approve.
What makes you so "sure" of other's thoughts, especially in a medium such as these forums? Most who offered to opine on Prellas' viv did so in a manner completely different than princess.

Personally speaking, I post without regard to other's approval on what I have to say...but with great regard to others as to HOW I express my point. Verbal abuse begets more verbal abuse, and usually nastier....and that's when the content of the message takes a back seat to the vitriol.

all i want to say is, get a smaller mouse, enjoy the wonderful world of corns, and if you have any questions i would be glad to give you my personal advice on the matter.
I presume you're speaking to Prellas in this instance. Regarding the mouse, as joe previously stated, she's already been advised.

jazz

you cant use advertising as an example because of todays campaign structures. mainstream ads are made for stupid people who cant see past the social image that the ad itself is brain washing on to them, even though the product may actually be as they show it. it is these naiive people who supply the major coorporations with all their money and keep our lives going in an awfull vicious cycle of poverty and hunger.
i did see that you said the same thing and i dont see the point in that besides trying to, for on reason or another, omehow cover up for your calling me a retard in advanced termonology. whats the point of games.
i stick to my story,
oreo-try my cookies and you'll understand.

LoL, what?

You're going from advertising (???) to campaign structures, to Corp. sales and funding?

What in the world are you talking about?

Sorry kid, but that's not how advertisting and marketing work. Things jus arent sold and sold and sold due to an ad. It might help at the beginning, but after time consumers see through misleading ads and sales cease.....

But I'm still not sure what that has to do with anything regarding this thread...

Wow, and I thought I was cynical. :)

Then it's apparent that you don't see the point, even when I qualified the "flame" in the following post, to wit:
jazzgeek said:

There was no "cover up" attempt, and if you truly believe that I intended to call you "a retard in advanced terminology", please accept my apology.

That said, let's get to the point: In a medium such as this, HOW you say things matters as much, if not more, as WHAT you say. Your belief that I attempted flame you ("calling me a retard in advanced terminology") proves my point, and I thank you for that. :)

My understanding is that princess and Prellas have smoothed things over, thus, unless you'd like to start a new thread in "General Chit-chat" regarding netiquette and civility, this will be my final post in this "meta-discussion".

Now, let's try to get back on topic: Prellas, enjoy your new snake!! You'll find that keeping these lil' cuties is an addiction, and you'll always want to get "just one more". As for the viv, it's just fine.....personally, my only concern is if you have a UTH with a tank on the floor. (and btw, when I first read "tank" in the initial post, my eyes were drawn to the "tank" in the background left. Don't ask me why. :crazy02: ).

oreo-try my cookies and you'll understand.
Ah, just another way of saying "relax, chill out, and have a beer", for those not of legal drinking age.

Irony. Gotta love it.

jazz
(listen to John Coltrane playing "Dear Lord", and you'll understand.) :)

if the way you say something matters more than what you're saying, then whats the point of speaking? and if you have to make a reference to my age, which to me, shows intimidation, i could most deffinately say something about drinking and be an idiot like many people my age and yours, but that just isn't me (and im sure you are aware that any underaged person could still get a hold of anything illigal today).

oreo1700 said:

Unless you're reading these threads aloud, nobody's speaking. We're typing.

Which, when you think of it (and please don't respond that I'm claiming you're not thinking. It's an expression.), is why how you respond matters as much as what you're "saying" (I hope the quotes genericize it.) Studies have shown that non-verbal cues account for 75% of "message reception". It's the reason that "smilies" have become a cottage industry on the internet.

and if you have to make a reference to my age, which to me, shows intimidation,
I'm confused here. Are you supposed to be intimidated, or am I? :)

I wasn't making a reference to YOUR age....again, you missed the point. I was simply stating that "relax, have an oreo" is no different than "relax, have a beer". (Thus, the word "irony" followed.) Is the crux of the message to relax, or to have the "consumable"?
i could most deffinately say something about drinking and be an idiot like many people my age and yours, but that just isn't me (and im sure you are aware that any underaged person could still get a hold of anything illigal today).
I was 6'2" tall by the age of 12 at a time when the legal drinking age was 18. I'm well versed in obtaining substances not suited for one's age. :grin01:

But again, just like the "you can't use advertising as an example" post, you're drifting waaaaay :-offtopic

As stated before, let's either get back on topic, or start a new thread in "General Chit-Chat".

jazz

Finally got my viv looking the way i wanted it to, gorgeous background with 2 24 inch suction vines on the side, soaked them in water before placing them in and sislari loved it, shes been climbing on the sides ever since, thank you all for the advice you've given me and princess thank you for opening my eyes.

I love those suction cup vines, mine love to climb up in them. Sounds like you've got a great setup!

about the speaking/typing/reading out loud: you know exactly what i meant but you responded to it in an imaature way. how am i drifting off topic when im responding to what you are saying (or typing, so that you don't get confused). i've already said what i had to say about the original topic at hand.

OH, my goodness Jazz, you're more than 2½ times Oreo's age yet you feel the need to engage him in a verbal (yes, I understand you're typing -go back to the latin roots of the word and you'll understand me) sparring match.

So you were older looking for your age and washed your brain cells in a whole lot of alcohol as a kiddie....good for you, you must be so proud.

I wrote you a PM asking you to cut it out because Prellas and I were cool with it all now and this had gone waaay off topic and you replied that I should...

jazzgeek said:
'Consider it done. I've made a "final" post to the thread, and have attempted to bring it back on topic....'

NO YOU HAVEN'T. You just wanted to have the final word but it's unbelievable how far off topic you want to take it just to pick a fight with oreo.

I wonder if we all took away our ages on the bit under our avatars and continued these converstaions if you would be making ½ the coments you have here? Bullying isn't funny in school and it's no funnier here.

Prellas or Rich or whoever is responsible for it...Can you lock this thread please???

Um, no, I feel the need to defend civility and etiquette in a medium such as this. I could care less about the age of the poster. Matter of fact, I wasn't even aware of oreo's age until you brought it to my attention; thanks for doing so, it provides context for what I've been reading.
So you were older looking for your age and washed your brain cells in a whole lot of alcohol as a kiddie....good for you, you must be so proud.
OH, my goodness princess, please read my response again:

Where have I stated that I "washed my brain cells in a whole lot of alcohol"? Where did I even claim that said substances were for my personal use? Just as in the crux of "relax, have a beer" or "relax, have an oreo" is in the request to relax , the crux in "I'm well versed in obtaining substances..." is in the obtaining.

I wrote you a PM asking you to cut it out because Prellas and I were cool with it all now and this had gone waaay off topic and you replied that I should...

NO YOU HAVEN'T. You just wanted to have the final word but it's unbelievable how far off topic you want to take it just to pick a fight with oreo.

Well, I did attempt to bring this back on topic. Please, let's continue reading:

Also, I even begged of oreo to return to topic a second time:
As stated before, let's either get back on topic, or start a new thread in "General Chit-Chat".

Additionally, I also posted a "tongue in cheek" regret that I was drawn back into the "meta-discussion", in the form of a movie quote:
"Just when I think I'm out....they pull me back in!" -- Michael Corleone, "Godfather III"

Furthermore, since you've YET AGAIN broken the bounds of netiquette and have posted a PERSONAL message in a PUBLIC forum (would you care to delve into the etymology of "public" and "personal" whilst I review "verbal"?), I'm compelled to herein post your original PM to me which commented on joejr14's behavior. However, I refuse to go to that level.

princess said:

AGAIN, I didn't even notice the ages of the respondents, and what's more, I could care less. Basic online civility should be well within the bounds of 17 year olds, as well as 26 year olds.

OH, my goodness princess, you're almost a decade older than oreo, and you should be aware of this. ;)

Bullying isn't funny in school and it's no funnier here.
  • Outside of the occasional line out of my posts in this thread, I'm not trying for "funny", and if you've ever communicated with me in chat, you'd find my sense of humor there. Basic civility and etiquette online are essential components to decent, worthwhile communication. All along, while trying not to be a self-appointed member of the "Forum Police", I've been defending that precept.
  • I have not yet begun to bully, nor will I. If I did, you'd be QUITE aware of it. I'd like to think that my responses, save the ones obviously steeped in sarcasm , have been measured and thoughtful.

To all who have had to endure this "meta-discussion", I apologize. To all who have given me kudos (in PMs and rep points) for defending civility in online forums, I thank you.

Well, that's that. For the third and final time, if you want to continue this in "Chit-Chat", I'd be happy to. If you want to continue this here, I'll read it and have a good chuckle.

Flame away. :flames:

regards,
jazz
