Pinky Shortage

Monty

New member
Monty just got done shedding 2 days ago, found the shed in his tank Monday Morning

He has not eaten for a week an a half (I'm assuming he refused his food because of the shed), and I went to a chain store yesterday to get him a pinky to feed him, and they were out (I guess the shipment did not make it or something). I tried a local pinky breeder and he said it would be another week before he'd have ones small enough for him. Went to another chain pet store and the freezer was broken so all the mice had to get thrown out.

I had one emergency pink in the freezer, pulled it out last night, and the thing was mutilated! It barely had any guts, and when I thawed it in boiling water most of the other guts got washed away. I tried feeding the "skin" to Monty but with no luck.

He had a healthy shed, is active at night, and sleepy during the day. I've seen him drink lots of water.
I'm beginning to panic, if I have to wait a week for the breeder, will he be okay? Its already been a week and a half. I'm thinking about calling some stores out of town tomorrow, however I really cannot afford to make a long trip so I'm really hoping I find something close. How long can Monty go before I need to take drastic measures to find him a pink?

Monty will be fine. I wouldn't stress to much about it. Just as already stated snakes can go weeks between meals.

Monty will be fine :)

I recommend ordering in bulk online, like pinkies and fuzzies. Convenient and cheaper.

IMO ordering online isn't very economical when you only have one snake to feed(cost of shipping + amount of mice you have to get to make it worth it). I thought about doing it when I got Kiyo, but at the rate she (and Omnom) have been growing, I would have to order WAY too many mice and would end up wasting several. If you have several snakes however, it may be worth it. Just my $.02

I get my feeders in bulk from various local suppliers (all of them are snake breeders). I was able to get deals of bags of 25/50/100 but was able to combine fuzzies and hoppers to count as "one bag" and save me some money and have the next size up before hand. It is worth checking to see if that is an option.

I disagree. Feed two pinks a week or two fuzzies a week...you can easily wipe them out. It is not worth $1-$2 a week and even then you have to depend on stores to have your mice. ARS has free shipping on $100+ orders and you can probably find some good deals elsewhere too. You can supply yourself with the next feeders, since the first stages of a corn are fast. Vacuum seal all the mice expect what you need when you first get them.

And of course, you can always get more snakes ;)

I don't like feeding my snakes more than every 5-7 days so feeding 2 per week is not an option. I have no need to grow mine fast nor do I think it is necessary to do so.
