Plantation Soil... Is it Safe?

Hello. I have been using plantation soil for my snakes, but was wondering, is it safe? It's very similar to the cocunut stuff, and certainly does absorb water like you wouldn't believe, but to make sure it isn't too damp (don't want scale rot) I put it under an extra lamp and let some of the water evaporate. However. I've noticed that it gets very crumbly. It isn't like sand, per se, but it is very crumbly and in pieces. So can anyone who has experience with tell me if it is safe? Or should I look into getting something more along the lines of aspen? I realize that aspen is ideal, and if the plantation soil poses a threat I will definitly get rid of it, but if not then I'll use my two remaining blocks of it.

i would think that it would be more hassle than its worth. i bought a HUGE package of aspen at petco for 15 bucks. i really think if i was just using it for my 1 snake in the 20l it would last years. i change the tank out prolly every month and a half, but i spot clean often.
