I remember when my first corn snake, Pineapple, stopped eating, we gave in and bought a live pinky. It's not something I'd normally be will to do, but I desperately wanted Pineapple to eat and was at the point where I'd try anything. Pineapple wouldn't eat it, so then we had a live baby mouse on our hands. It was terrible. After much discussion, we realized there was no way we could keep it, it definitely wouldn't survive if we tried to grow it up, so I fed it to another one of my snakes. It was really hard to do, when its so small, and wiggling and capable of making noises. I wish I'd known then I could've put it in the freezer to let it die humanely.

When they are frozen, I honestly think of them only as food, just like ground beef or a frozen chicken breast. People at work are horrified to think I have "dead animals" in my freezer but *to me* its no different then having a piece of dead cow or poultry in my fridge.

It is kinda gross having dead mice in the freezer. I have mine so well packed up that unless someone really looked they wouldn't realize what it is!

i jus buy mine as i go along, i pass a pet shop on the way home from work every night so whenever i need one i pick it up and drive it home with me by this point it has started to thaw and he then does not have to wait long for his dinner lol>

I have mine in a separate freezer, in the clear plastic bags they ship in. I have them organized by size.
One day, this past summer, I had a BBQ with a bunch of friends over. Most of them that were over are repltile people, but a couple of them were not. One of those non reptile people was also a vegan.
Imagine the reaction when she opened the wrong freezer to put her veggie burgers in there, & saw bags of frozen rodents on the shelf. LOL
She was a good sport about it, & we were all able to laugh about it.

I hate that the mice have to be killed. My son has pet rats and my daughter has pet mice. I have a small group of fancy pet mice. My favorite is a longhaired white male mouse with a blue cap on his head and butt. His name is fluffy. lol
My daughter gets really sad when she sees new shipments. :( And I simply CAN'T feed live mice to anything. My husband has to do it, for the ones who won't eat f/t, and it's even hard for him. :(

Oh, forgot to mention, 2 of my son's rats do tricks. Jump through a hoop and play basketball, you know? Pet rats are awesome! CJ, the male one is a silvered black. He's beautiful.

The ones that won't eat f/t are mostly balls, and you know how picky they can be. willing to eat f/t one day and not the next. :(

Silvered black--awesome! I had a black berk dumbo rat (along with 15 others) whom I loved, her name was Aurora. Now, I have an allergy to rats and I can't hold them without having problems breathing. I had to give away four of my rats already, but we didn't give away the fifth because she is really old and probably only has a few months left anyway.

I had trouble with mice at first. But now they don't bother me at all, and I think i would even be fine with rats. I want either a Woma Python, Hogg Island Boa, or Irian Jaya Carpet Python, and all of them eat rats! I just don't think I could feed live rats--I know the look of fear on a rat, and I couldn't stand to watch that.

You are from Worthington, OH, and you have a cornsnake named Estelle? Awesome editorial you wrote last week in the Columbus Dispatch!

Yes, that was me!!! Thank you! I'm only fifteen years old, too...I was so excited!

WOW! My daughter. who is 14, is getting her first cornsnake today at the reptile show in Columbus!
You did a great job helping educate the public about the issue! WAY TO GO!

Thanks! I was hoping to go to the expo today, but my dad doesn't like snakes and doesn't want to bring me. I went in November...I'm just so excited for my 16th birthday so then I can drive there any time I want! The expo's cool, have you been there before? Post your new arrival once you get him/her!

I will try to post some pics. tomorrow- we got our first snakes today! Daughter got a 3-4 year old anery female she fell in love with; I got a hatchling male creamsicle!
It's so hard not to handle them for a while!

Please post pics, we all would love to see your new babies!!

I never really thought I liked anerys, til I saw one in person. They look so much nicer in real life I think. And at that 3-4 year old stage, they are pretty much bomb proof and perfect for handling, unlike a fragile squirmy baby. Great choice!!!

Creamsicles are really nice, but you know he's not a cornsnake, right?
He is a hybrid between a cornsnake and a great plains ratsnake.
And I would love to see his pic!!

I couldn't stand feeding a poor live rat either. :( CJ just LOVES cuddles, but you really CAN tell when they are scared. A couple of our rats don't like being messed with. They bite.
I went into a store about 2 hours from us and they had a sale going-spend $30 and get a free black bear hamster. My kids are getting the hamster for christmas!

Sorry to continue to hijack this thread! Yes, I guess I did know my creamsicle was a hybrid, I have been reading Kathy Love's Cornsnake book. How do they differ in personality? My little guy is pretty outgoing and fearless! Thanks for pointing that out to me, that fact sort of got lost in my brain amid the chaos of the reptile show!
I need to name him now!

They really don't differ in personality at all. The only thing I don't like about creamsicles is that sometimes they are bred to corns, and the babies are sold as pure when they are not. And there really is no way to know for sure.

But they are beautiful docile pets, and I still want pictures :)

I am a rat freak. I LOVE them. I know they are used as food, and have no problem when they die humanely, but I have nightmares when I hear of cases when they don't.....
I have kept them since 2003 and have only had one biter. And it was out of fear. Over time he learned that I would not mess with him, and he would get treats from me, and I learned what not to do. Overall, he was a good boy.
I have a girl now who is just amazing. I had her spayed after her cagemate died, and she went to live with my male after his cagemate died. She is the most relaxed cuddley thing EVER! She loves to lay under my neck and stretch out and go to sleep.
