Python case: Couple sentenced to 12 years in prison

NOT LONG ENOUGH!!!!!!! (my comment!!)

SUMTER COUNTY --

A Sumter County woman and her boyfriend convicted in the death of the woman's 2-year-old daughter were sentenced to Wednesday to 12 years in prison.

Last month, Jaren Hare, 21, and Charles Darnell, 34, were convicted of third-degree murder, manslaughter and child neglect. Authorities said Darnell's 8-foot, 6-inch albino Burmese python wrapped itself around the head of Hare's 2-year-old daughter, Shaianna, on July 1, 2009.

Both faced up to 35 years in prison. They rejected plea deals for 10 years behind bars.

Charles' total sentence includes 12 years in prison, five years probation on release from prison and time served.

It took the jury less than two hours to decide that the toddler's mother and her boyfriend were at fault for not keeping the python in a secure cage.

12 years!!! That is ridiculous! If they killed their kid with a knife if would be life. Same thing and so much worse considering the kid and the snake were seriously abused and neglected.

The python was rescued, treated for stab wounds, recovered, and is being cared for somewhere. The python was, miraculously, not turned into a scapegoat and punished.

Good news, but a better punishment would have been soaking them in chum and dropping them in shark infested waters. But that's just my opinion.

It is very good news to hear that the snake is doing well and isn't going to be punished in any way for it's owners stupidity.

I am betting from the cops or something when they were trying to uncoil it from the kid?

If I remember reading the story right the wounds were inflicted by the boyfriend while he was trying to get it to release. Which is very stupid considering it is fairly easy to uncoil a snake if you know how and he could have stabbed the little girl in the head or neck. It's obvious they didn't care about the girl or the animal though.

Ah! I never really read the story all the way through but yes so ridiculous to feel you have to stab it in order to uncoil. Find the tail and start unwrapping sheesh!

I guess we might have to pull that horrible story up but it was speculated that the snake actually had nothing to do with the little girl dying that it was possible child abuse. Now don't take my word for it. But either way they deserve a longer sentence.

The Medical Examiner's report supported the story that the snake killed the child. I would have bet on a cover-up, but apparently not. I mean, that they killed her and tried to blame the snake.

I was really expecting (and still suspect) a cover up, too. According to the 911 call that I listened to at the time, the boyfriend found the snake wrapped around the girl. The snake was only about 8 - 8 1/2' and thin, judging from the video I saw. But instead of immediately unwrapping it, he went and got a knife from someplace (unless he normally kept a knife in the child's room), and started stabbing it. For such a relatively small, thin, snake that was his pet, that sure sounded fishy to me. Keep in mind that I once had a 12 1/2' Burm wrap up my pet cat many years ago. My python was NOT thin, either. But I had little trouble unwrapping it to save the cat. I certainly did not think it was time to go searching for a knife to stab it! After having been in a somewhat similar situation (though not saying a cat is the same as a child, but a similar emergency), I can say from experience that the 911 call just never sounded right to me.

I sure wish that in addition to any sentence, they could both be sterilized, AND never allowed to own a pet of any kind in the future! Just my own opinion, of course!

Hey http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2011/08/24/snake_manslaughter-2/
Good to see Kathy and one newspaper in the nation got the story correct
after a whopping 2 years.
It (history) gets re-written so often, it's difficult to keep up with the original version sometimes.
t'Would be nice if education was taught in the prison system, the kind such as advanced independent living skills, much could be gained for the couple's benefit. There's got to be a better way to bring resolve then centerstage poor ignorant humans. Glad this was in the limelight while Casey was the focus, lots'a reptiles could'a'bin banned if it was the other way around.

They got the snake as an impulse buy and had no idea how to care for it. They did not know how to unwrap the snake from the poor child, so he wasted time searching for a knife. I agree they shouldn't be allowed to have more kids and the woman's other baby should stay with a guardian until adulthood.
