Question about planting my terrarium

I wanted to have live plants in my tank instead of fake ones. Is it possible to take grass from outside and use it if I wash it thoroughly or is it just too risky? I've taken branches and rocks from outside before, but I boiled and baked them thoroughly before putting them in. Are there any sites that have step by step tutorials? Or any good examples of a planted terrarium? I've seen a lot of frog tanks but not a lot of snake tanks.

I LOVE how this looks:

And this, but it's too tropical for my needs:

Not too sure about grass. I know in that first video where it looks like grass appears to be more of a moss. Also, man that first video is pretty but I would *not* want to try to clean that thing. Sure, in a living viv you shouldn't have to due to bioactive substrates and natural bugs and whanot, but I saw sooooo many potential poop nightmares.

As for info on setting up a living viv, there's an older thread here discussing the basics of a bioactive substrate setup, and a few various threads concerning which plants make great choices for corns based on minimal light needs, ease of care, and hardiness. I don't have direct links but they should come up in a forum search if you search for bioactive substrate and or living viv. Outside of these forums, there's a chapter in a book I can't remember the name of that covers.

I'm planning to set up a bioactive substrate, live planted viv for my snake, and Nythain is right, if you search bioactive substrate, there is a great thread about it here. There is also a fantastic book mentioned in the thread, The Art of Keeping Snakes, which is all about setting up a natural planted tank for snakes. I'm about halfway through it now, and it's great. Between the book and that thread, you should be set to set up your own natural planted viv. :)

If you do go the grass route, I would remove the snake for a couple of weeks and plant grass seed (make sure it isn't treated with pesticides in the seed). You wouldn't be introducing anything from the outdoors.

Grass is not going to work, for starters, it needs a LOT of light. I don't think you're going to find it does well in an indoor terrarium. And think about best-case scenario... if the grass does well, what are you going to do in a month? Three months? Have you ever seen a yard that wasn't mowed all summer? Fescue will grow three feet+ high.

I used mondo grass in my viv. It's doesn't need much light and doesn't grow too tall if you get the short type. But it does grow really slow.
