It may have been musk, as a defensive reaction. If the snake does musk or poop while you're holding it, try not to react by putting it away, as that can condition the snake to trying to end each handling session that way! I used to have that problem with my big anery, Norwood. I learned to keep a towel over my lap and kitchen roll handy to be able to continue the handling and break the association for him.
