Questioning if I should start 1:3 ASF for my herps?

I have 6 corns, 1 ball, and 2 drawf boas (Hog isle & nic). Do you think a little 1:3 ratio might be a good invesment. A friend of mine says she will give me an already settled breeding group. I have been having trouble latley finding the feeders sizes that I need for my snakes and bulk ordering is getting to expensive and not enough room in the freezer.
I have heard lots of good things about them but would like to know if you think it is worth it with the number of snakes I have, most of them are '08. I know the ball will surely become addicted and wont take anything else but has anyone had much luck with boas and corns. Do they get really addicted to them? I am looking to have them as mainly a supplement for fuzzy, hopper and weanling size for now, while still feeding mice, and rats. I have done lots of research and they seem like they would be the perfect size to be able to feed everyone and easy to keep. Just wanting your input on wether it would be worth it for 9 or ore snakes as I am sure there will be more to come down the road, and if it would be to much of an addiction risk.

From hat I understand most boas will get hooked on ASFs and not want to eat anything else. However corns for the most part are easy to switch around on what you offer. My experience on this is limited to my own 08 corn and a sand boa that was not picky though.

I am glad you started this thread. I recently purchased a 1.3 ASF colony at the Raleigh NC show. Although I have only corns and kings I am wanting the ASF's to give me the smaller sized food as well. Mine should start breeding within the month.

ASF's are good but just letting you know, that the pups are a bit bigger than regular lab or fancy mice. I have a couple of colonies of them and they produce good food for the snakes. I grab them day one and they are too big for baby corns.

1:2 or 1:3 ratio, would be a good amount for your collection. I haven't come into a problem with switching between mice and ASF's. Maybe I have been lucky.

Good Luck,

Wayne

My ASFs haven't bred yet, but my corn has gone dwarf hammy back to mice again. I keep hearing how baby ASFs are bigger, would they be ok for 9 month old corns? Ok I know it goes by size. Rose currently takes peach fuzzies (mouse), what size ASF would be equal to that? If you can cut mouse pinks to make them easier to eat can you do it with ASFs too?

They may be ok for a nine month old snake. But, that all depends on the size of your snake and the size of the rodent. Do you have a scale? That may help you determine what everything. Either that or look at the girth of the feeder and compare it to the roundest part of your snake, (the old fashioned method). You may be OK, so I wouldn't abandon it. A newborn ASF's may be close to a small fuzzy. You can cut any feeder, if you need to.

Hope that helps,

Wayne

As of right now my smallest snake is pushing 30 grams. The guy I get my feeders from only gets mice; pinks, fuzzy, and adults. I am using rat pinks for hopper size and am going to need weanling soon for my hog isle and a couple of my corns. I would just be looking to use them to supplement for what I dont have and to also see how cost evective it is. Has anyone tried switching boas from ASF to rats with any success? Both the nic and hog are not to picky they eat just about anything I put in front of them. The ball of course is the picky one but he is on sml-sml/med rats and I would have to wait for the offspring to hit adult before they would be big enough for him.

I dont know if this has been discussed anywhere but when it comes to culling, how hard is it on the moms? Do you need to let them go through their first litter before you start taking out what you need. I am wanting to eventually be able to pull a variety of sizes and freeze them for when I need them. At about what age do you start looking for replacements or allowing offspring to take the place of your breeders?

Thanks for all the replys and help. I really apriciate it.

ASF

I currently have 3 balls, 1 corn and 1 hog island boa. They are all on ASFs. I breed and sell them. They are great for all of those. I don't mind having mine addicted to them because I don't plan on ever getting rid of either. ASFs are AWESOME!!

Culling doesn't seem to be an issue. They can breed for about a year and then slow down. I have 6 colonies, so having different sizes is never a problem.
