Questions about Anoles

I plan on getting an anole tomorrow to use to scent pinkies for two 05's. I was wondering how easy it would be to keep it alive. Assuming that it gets them to eat I would like to try to keep it alive for awhile. But I am not going to go way out of my way since it will most likely end up in the freezer anyway. If I give it an enclousure approximately the size of a 10gal tank with peat moss substrate and stuff to climb on (and of course water) will it be okay. I hadn't planned on trying to give it basking spots. I will probably feed it meal worms and maybe some stuff I catch outside my apartment.

Also, if I want to have a reserve of some anole scented pinkies is it better to freeze the anole and rub the pinkies on it as needed or can I let it bite the pinkies while it is still alive and then put them back in the freezer?

Any input would be appreciated. :shrugs:

Thanks

When I want my pinkie to smell anole, I thaw the pinkie and the anole and then I put the pinkie head in the anole mouth and push the mouth of the anole a little bit like if the anole would bite the pinkie. It work perfectly for me that way. And then I put te anole back in the freezer until the next time. You can use the same anole several times.

As for your other questions, sorry I can't help you. Good luck!

This isn't really much help but, I did have a lot of trouble getting a live anole to bite a pinky. I am telling you this so you can be prepared and realise it may not happen straight away. It took me a good 15 mins to aggravate the anole enough to get it to bite. Maybe I just got a docile anole. :shrugs:

As for freezing pre scented pinks, that I would be interested to know if it works, or if the scent fades with the freeze/thaw process.

Anoles are easy to keep alive tho. They don't "drink" water from a standing source, ie bowl, but are dew licker's. Misting with a spray bottle twice a day is all I do. I found anoles will eat just about anything, however I would be carefull with feeding caught insects as you may be feeding a bug that just got sprayed with insect killer from next door. (slight, but still a risk) Crickets work well and are easy to keep.

Thanks for the tips/ideas. I couldn't get the dang thing to bite the pinkies no matter how hard I tried. Had to settle for just rubbing them all over it and especially around the mouth. Both little ones that wont eat are in with their pinkies now but neither one seems interested in eating. They aren't and never have even smelling the pinkies.

If left meals in their sterilites once before and they refused is it okay to try that again? The last time I tried that was over a week ago. :shrugs:

I kept my Anole alive, why freeze it. I would be certain eventually the smell of the Anole will disappear after a while in the freezer..

Regards..

I have had more luck with anole scenting with anole saliva versus just rubbing the pink all over the body, which did nothing whatsoever. And I think someone just got a docile anole. Every one I've used one that was alive it would bite the dickens out of the pink, me, and the tongs I used to grab the anoles..

I keep a tub of frozen anoles in my freezer for scenting purposes. They thaw out quickly enough to get the mouth to open, swab the pink's head around and put the anole back in the freezer. I'd think that pre-scented frozen pinks would lose their scent after a while. You may be able to bag up some anoles with some pinks and freeze them together to see if that works.

Anoles are relatively easy to keep alive in a 10 gallon. But I would recommend putting up a 40 watt incandescent bulb as they do like to bask and it makes them more active and whatnot. They also like greenery, so getting some cheap fake green vines from Walmart to string around would be good as well. You can make a perfectly functional and nice looking anole cage for under $20.

I fed mine moths, flies, maggots (fish bait), and small crickets and they ate just about anything within reason. I would make sure to use a calcium + D3 powder (Rep Cal) for dusting the food items. Makes them easier to see, easier to catch, and wholly more nutritious.

Are you feeding your stubborn 2005's in their sterilite tubs (which is what it sounded like) or a different container? Most of my success has been through feeding them in a really tiny enclosure: 8oz deli cup, yogurt container with lid (Dannon), or just a small food storage thing where they can't hide from their food or ignore it. And then placing that container in a dark closet overnight.

Good luck with getting them to eat and have fun with the anole.

I must have a docile anole, because I just couldn't get him to do anything. Maybe if I find a way to gently pry at his mouth. :shrugs: I would hate to have to freeze him just so that I can get a pinky in his mouth.

Right now I have two 16qt sterilites with one of them turned upside down setting on the other (with a hole cut in the top for a door) for an enclosure. It comes out to being close to a 10gal. And I've put some plants/vines from Walmart inside.

I have always put them into their original deli cups to eat. One night I left some pinky heads in their sterilites in case they might be interested but they weren't. For tonight I'm leaving each of them and a pinky inside the deli cup which is placed inside there sterilites with a towel over top to make it as dark as possible.

Thanks, hopefully he'll just turn into a new pet and stick around with me. :)

I one had a couple Anoles as pets. They are pretty fun because they change colour. twice, one of them got sick and when I pried it's mouth open to give it medicine it died with in a few minutes. This happened twice, to one and then the one I got to replace it only a week and a half later. So I'm not sure if it's a good idea to pry it's mouth open.

does anole senting work all through the snakes life? Would it work for adult snakes eating adult mice?
