Here is the deal- I was sold a snake a couple of weeks ago. I just got home after being gone a few days and I have found eggs! I was planning on breeding my snakes, but not for a couple of years. She is of age and may have been housed with a male before I got her... I just don't know and I know for a fact that asking for your help will be quicker than e0mailing the man I bought her from. Luckily my grandfather just gave me his old incubator, so I have that all set up.

My question is... will a corn snake lay eggs that have not been fertilized? I know other reptiles do, I just haen't heard if these guys will. I tried holding them up to the light and have not seen any veins or anything so I'm worried about them. What do you all think?????

Thanks!

Do you have a way to post a pic? If not search the forum for slugs and compare them to yours. I have heard that corns can retain semen until they ovulate. slugs are small and hard.
remember don't turn eggs upside down or move the around alot could cause the embryo to drown.

I can't post a pic right now, but she laid 9 eggs. 4 of which looked bad to me. they were off to the side, had hard brown bottoms and were slimy when I "lightly" sprayed them. The others were white, oval shaped, sunken in, but I now have them in Vermiculite in the incubator. One of them looks like it has soaked up the water and is now more rounded. I'm still trying to get hold of the man I bought her from. I didn't see any veins when I held them up- is that a sure way to tell if they are not fertile??

You might not see veins from the beginning but if you can tell a difference between the two types of eggs won't hurt to incubate anyway you never know just keep them humid and moist. temp @ 82 degrees

Thanks! I have them incubating right now in some vermiculite. The temerature is moe around 86 is that way too hot or would it be fine. This is my first time using an incubator and I don't want to fidget with it too much. Might ruin the eggs!

I would try to get it down to 82-83 that way you have some leeway if it goes up a little if your at 86 and it goes up it could be dangerous for the eggs. any thing 80-84 is good .

I got the temp down to around 82-84. The five eggs I put in there all plumped up and look very normal from what I can see. They are all chalky to the touch but not hard. They all seem to be fine. My only other question is: would an infertile egg do the same thing a fertile egg would do when put into incubation? What I mean is... would they plump up and look just as healthy or would they go bad within a few days since they are not fertile???

The other snake I bought from this same man is now showing signs of having eggs as well now! I finally talked to him and he said he bought both off of a woman not long ago and he isn't sure if they were housed with males or not, so there is a chance. :)

From your description of the eggs, there is a high probability that they are fertile. If they look the same way this time next week, the odds are 99+% they are fertile.

Small, irregular in shape, yellowish in color, and slimy desribes a slug (infertile egg).

Snake egg shells are leathery, not hard and calcified like a chicken egg.

Let us know how things turn out in a couple of months. Good luck.

oops looks like my last post didn't go through. Anyways, thanks for the help and I'll keep you posted!!!

She's a miami
