Rats.. good mice.. going to be fed off!!!

Emanon

This and That
Ok... I can do the rats thing with pretty good success... mice... a whole other story!!! I have had two litters out of two colonies and they went hannibal on both of them... these suckers are food if they do it again... no freeloaders her baby!!! :madeuce:

When you know the next litter is close~ a female is about to pop~ go ahead and bring the mice inside next to your PC in a small clean tub. Then~ as your working on your PC listen to them. When the babies are born there will be a lot of little squeaks and squeals~ a lot of baby stealing and moving~ but after a bit you'll here some of the babies screaming bloody murder.......

This usually means they are being bloody murdered! Pay attention then and catch whoever is killing them. Watch carefully~ they squeal over being groomed too~ and perfectly good mice will eat a baby another mouse killed to clean up the mess~ so watch to see who is actually KILLING babies. It's hard to tell~ as the killer will often look like she is grooming a baby not killing it~ but if you interupt the killing you'll miss the chance to get rid of her~ so just watch carefully until your sure. The last one I caught was very casually biting the base of the skull out of every baby she came across.

Feed that one out.
USUALLY there is only one killer.
SOMETIMES the other mice will kill off the killer for you~ but not always.
I usually try to wait it out and give the other mothers a chance to kill off the killer~ but sometimes you just have to catch her in the act yourself.

Good Luck!

I may have to watch more often but I cannot move the tub in by the good old comp... just won't be allowed LOL. Whoever it is... the clock is ticking!

LMAO..

I want to raise my own food but my wife said no :shrugs:

lol my girlfriend thinks the same. I can't raise my own mice at the time being =/. do you have more than one female in the cage?

yes I do! I tried for colonies of mice just like I did on the rats... so far rats... a trillion... mice... 6... the rest they half ate and I took these ones from them!

now to add insult to injury... my mice have mites!!! These puppies are toast :flames: one question... if I freeze these adults can I feed them to my snakes? Will there be any harm?? Other than to the mice and mites?

Can rodent mites transfer to snakes?

I think mites are mites for the most part but not 100% sure there... I would think that if you froze them, they would be safe to feed to the snakes in a week or two...

I didn't have a problem getting my wife to let me raise them.. However, I started with ONE cage, 3 females one male..

We now have THREE cages, the kids have a group of three males they picked out for pets, all from the same litter and all getting along so far..( I am watching anxiously because I really can not afford to set them up individual cages on the level Wifee wants them spoiled) And the third cage is for the sole female picked as a pet, my wife's.. :shrugs:

SHeesh!! at this rate poor Sneaky Snake is going on a diet!! (Kidding, the snake WILL eat, wife and kids can be mad at me if they like :twoguns: )
