Red: Through My Corny Eyes

Red is usually staying in his hiding place. I'll get a pvc pipe to go from end to the other in a couple of days. In other news, he has discovered the bearded dragon in the tank about ten feet away from him when I followed Red around. I'm trying to avoid unnecessary stress, but I feel like Red has bonded OK to me. Hopefully I can identify his morph soon, but I think he's Classic. Red was very outgoing at the pet store(Petco), going around the entire tank. He has a dark spot on his stomach, which I will post a picture of tomorrow. It may just be digestion.

Very cute! He is some sort of amel (albino) from the red eyes. Especially when they are younger, you sometimes see the spot of food from digestion. I wouldn't worry too much yet, but definitely post a pic and we'll try to help you out.

Red is a cute little amelanistic corn snake. :) Because their bellies are very white, and their skin very thin at this age, you can often see their organs and digested food. It made it very easy for me to tell when my fire (diffused amel) was about to poop when he was a tiny baby.

I put him down in his water bowl and took a picture. He enjoyed it for half a minute and went around to his hiding place to wait for me to take the hint and leave. I did, like a true gentleman. He noticed dinner cooking seconds before I did, so that's why you see the beginning or end of a sniff.

All others were hiding under aspen during the day, but this fellow was the only one showing in the tank. Petco cohabits its corn snakes, in case you didn't know. It's a small tank, maybe eight gallons tops for four or five of them. I couldn't resist getting Red out of it.

I love the pic of Red in his water bowl. He's gonna outgrow that one soon!

Did you buy that water bowl separate or was it part of a PetSmart snake setup? If it was, unless the lid has been changed from a year ago, that's the lid I had a snake escape from as soon as he was big enough to turn the latch from the inside. It's a flawed design in my opinion.

I don't like seeing snakes cohabbed in stores either.

Indeed! I don't want to get one too big, though. While there's a chance it might be more fun for him to swim around in, I'm not risking the possibility of it being too big, as IIRC that can cause stress.

It was part of a Petco Zilla package deal, which includes two handy lamps for when it gets too cold. Unfortunately it lacked a heat pad, however. However, I can't see any latches on the inside. Are they small, or do I misunderstand you?

No mine was from PetSmart so the lid is different. Glad your kit came with a better lid. Mine came with a heat pad so I guess just the water dish is the same.

I'm glad of it too. Petco usually has better supplies and healthier animals in my experience. Apparently their mice are more likely to be freezer burnt, at least in a few users's experiences.

Thanks for the tip, anyway!
