Reptibark Bugs?

N8Dawg

I just started using reptibark a couple of weeks ago and I really like how it looks. However I found a bunch of little white bugs in the bottom of the aquarium today. They don't look like mites but I don't know what they are or if they will harm my snakes. Anybody know what they are or what I should do? :shrugs:

I've had that problem too with Forest-Bark (fir chips). I place the bag in the freezer over night and then let it thaw out to room temp. before using it in our cages. It seems to kill all the bugs because I've never seen one since.

Cheers,
Jason

bump b/c i was cleaning out water bowls and cages today when i noticed the same thing as N8 described. They do not look like the mites that have been described so i'm not really sure what they are. However i've put all my snakes on papertowels for now and the reptibark in the freezer

My understanding is that they are wood mites, not related to snake mites. (Annoying but not a blood parasite.) You can bake the repti-bark also.

there were none on the snakes. i checked around the eyes, vent, nostrils, mouth b/c i thought those areas would be the most vulnerable. I sorta freaked out when i saw them b/c one day there are none(visible) and quite a fes the next. So i took them all off reptibark, disposed of the old and put the rest in the freezer. hopefully things will work out.
