RIP Sir Edmund Hillary

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Sir Edmund Hillary, the unassuming beekeeper who conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century's greatest adventurers, has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced Friday. He was 88.

The gangling New Zealander devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal and took his fame in stride, preferring to be called "Ed" and considering himself just an ordinary beekeeper.

"Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander with modest abilities. In reality, he was a colossus. He was an heroic figure who not only 'knocked off' Everest but lived a life of determination, humility, and generosity," Clark said in a statement.

"The legendary mountaineer, adventurer, and philanthropist is the best-known New Zealander ever to have lived," she said.

Hillary's life was marked by grand achievements, high adventure, discovery, excitement — and by his personal humility. Humble to the point that he only admitted being the first man atop Everest long after the death of climbing companion Norgay.

Okay, I'm going to hang my head in shame... I was more upset when I thought you were reporting the loss of one of your beloved snakes :)

R.I.P. Sir Edmund Hillary. I've known who he was forever, but if you're dweeb enough to watch the Special Features of the special edition Lord of the Rings DVDs, you'll see footage of him visiting an outdoor shooting. Peter Jackson and cast and crew treat him like the hero that he was. He's on the NZ currency!

Which special edition is that? I've got a couple I think :)

Yeah...he was one of those 'greats' in mountaineering. I used to read a lot about him when I was in my climbing phase a while ago. Wish I could get back out and climb but I just seem too busy these days...and it doesn't help I'm not in undergrad where I had a bunch of buddies ready to do something stupid if it meant skipping class!

I first learned about him when I contracted for Sears. The line of tents they sold were endorsed by him.

R.I.P.

Rest in peace Sir Edmund, he truly was a great man. But at least he passed away at the ripe old age of 88, so he definately lived a long and full life. He was even a Knight Commander of the British Empire! :)

All the best

David
