RIP Tatzu (Bearded dragon)

Daenerys

Mother of Dragons
So, there was a thread about a month back about how my boyfriend's roommates found a little brown snake that had managed to find a way into the apartment, and they were blaming Brandon for it saying it was his snake (And it was NOT). Because of that we had to have our friend house our animals for a little while. Well, we have been working on bringing them all back to the apartment (secretly, of course) and we had finally gotten everyone back except for our two lizards, Tatzu and the armadillo lizard. Tatzu was just a baby and seemed a bit stressed about the move to a new place, so I asked that they keep a close eye on him and make sure he eats properly and doesn't get sick. They said they would, and they have 6 bearded dragons of their own so I figured they know what they're doing.

However, a few days ago I thought he appeared to be getting skinny. I told them so, and asked that they make sure he eats something. They said they would. This morning I wake up to a text message saying that I better come take him back because he isn't looking too good and I may have to syringe feed him some food. I dug out a corner of the room for him (this apartment is just SO crowded) and bought everything I needed (new tank, screen lid, baby food and some leafy greens) but when I get over there I am informed that Tatzu is in fact dead. :'(

I was devastated, bawled my eyes out all the way home. I hate that my little baby had to go and die because I wasn't there to take care of him. I should have brought him home the moment I realized he was looking skinnier than usual. But I thought I could trust them to take care of him, and help him if he started looking sick. Instead they just call me and tell me to do it...but I was half an hour away, I just couldn't get there fast enough :'(

This was just like what happened yesterday. I was at the Raleigh Reptile and Exotic Animal show and I saw a guy with a bin full of baby tegus. There was one that looked incredibly thin and lethargic, so I asked the guy if I could take him to try and save his life. The poor thing died JUST as I walked in and was preparing to get him some water. Didn't even get a chance to try and save his life. So, two deaths in one weekend. Quite depressing...

I think part of the problem was that they buy their crickets in bulk and they have mostly adults and the crickets they bought were too big for Tatzu to eat :(

Sorry for your loss. If they are buying crickets in bulk I assume they are reptile people... how could they not know the "distance between the eyes" rule??!? Some people....

I'm so sorry about Tatzu. I love my Isabel more than anything- I dread the day I lose her. RIP little Tatzu...

I am very sorry for your loss that sucks:( Were you buying him food to eat at all and bringing it, were they dusting the crix, keeping him at good temps? So many things could have caused his death, but usually they can go sometime without food though not if their stressed and being kept too cold. RIP Tatzu:(

They had a heat lamp on the left side of his tank on him morning and night (red one at night) and it was always warm in there when I took him out to say hi, they fed him veggies and crickets, they dusted with calcium, I honestly don't know exactly what killed him....the only think I can think of is the crickets were too big. =/

Hmmm how long was he there? A beardie could go a month off feed- they wouldn't look so hot, but if they had sufficient water they'd survive. Even when crix are too big most lizards will down them- what kind of substrate was he on? Impaction would kill quickly and they would stop eating once impacted. Ask if he was pooing normaly? You'll probably never know, but when you guys get your roommate situation worked out I'm sure another beardie will come on home, lol

Yeah I want another one, maybe one not so young, but not until we get the new apartment without roommates.

He was on reptile carpet, there was water, I have no idea if he was pooping because there was poop everywhere and he wasn't the only one in the tank (It was a HUGE tank for his size and she kept him in with her frillie who is same size as he was), there were always veggies available and stuff...since he was on the carpet I doubt he got impacted.

Stress then probably. Beardies and frilles or really any mixed species let alone solitary species should not be mixed:( Even if they were the same size age, maturity, sex, and cage dominance play a major factor in who gets to eat and drink and who doesn't. I am really sorry you had to lose a beloved pet this way:(

Sorry to hear about the problems.

Was there any UV lights on him?

Yes, of course. He had the right lighting and everything. I am more inclined to believe, now, that it must have been cage dominance as danielle said. That seems to make more sense...

It happens a lot more than people admit with lizards. I weigh and check my couples and female cages weekly because more often than not someone is bullied away from the food and water:( Food is one thing, but it is the lack of water that does them in quickly- keeping any pet is always a learning experience I've had my share of woulda coulda's it happens.

I suppose then it is a good thing that I picked up my boyfriend's armadillo lizard that my friends also put in that cage with the frillie....he actually seems fatter than when we took him over there, so at least we aren't going to lose him the same way. He is now in a tank by himself. All our animals have returned to us.
