sand boa

hi i got a sand boa yesturday and he isnt eating plus i don't know if its boy or female lol the man in the pet store said he gets to 4ft but i looked on the internet and it said 15 inches to 20 inches im confused i know its a cornsnake forum but i couldnt find any were else

If you take a picture we can perhaps correctly identify which species it is then go from there.

If you can't take a picture could you please discribe the colouring and pattern. I'm going to guess its a Kenyan sand boa - Black/brown and orange with a zigy zagy pattern?

If so they get to roughly 3ft+ for females 2ft for males.

Possible reasons why it's not eating:

Temperatures are not high enough - sandies (especialy kenyans) like it hot... like 90F+
Food is not hot enough - try dipping the head in boiling hot water
Food is not the right smell - try braining or scenting with dirty mouse bedding

Cornmad,
You need to give us more info here. How big is your new Sand Boa? And how old is it?

Also you just got it yesterday. Why are you feeding it right now??? With all snakes you should wait atleast a week before you feed. Don't hold them or bother them until about 5-7 days. I would try to feed then. Patients is the word with new snakes, have some.

What did you try to feed it?? Live or Frozen? How did you try to feed it? When we first got our wormlings we had to feed them in a dark box. So I picked up a small gift box for a few bucks and set the snake in there with a live pinky. Our pair would not immediately eat frozen for us but we eventually converted them.

Also what is your tank setup like? What do you have as a substrate? These snakes are burrowers and like to dig underneath substrate. I personally keep these guys in Calci sand and feed them out of the cage.

Elle gave some other great suggestions to follow as well.

I have a pair of these. My female will not eat when she is in shed.
They need to feel safe to eat. I actually partially bury the deli cup with the snake and the pinky inside, and put something on top to give them the feel of being underground.
You should let them it used to their new homes for a few days as stated.
18 inches sounds like an older one.

Ah well, the Christmas school holidays will be over in a few days, then the little horrors won't have the energy to troll any more. Boredom is a dreadful thing in a child...

Yer, I do weird stuff when I'm bored. I don't troll on forums, though. (I think I might do it though, now that I think about it. No worries-- it's not a site owned by Rich)

Good thing I'm too busy making lolcats to get trolled...Although generally I'm not patient enough to respond to posts consisting of poor grammar and spelling errors.

Wow, Guess I have just been trolled too. seklo saw cornmad try to feed the fuzzy but in the other thread it sounds like they don't know each other.

Here is another Troll for you.
