Science marches on

So really, Ida is the branching off of monkeys from lemurs. She's at the split, showing characteristics of both. How much of a missing link is that? Isn't the missing link the one where you say "this is an ape, this is a human-like ape, this is a human?" I'm just saying...

Or even more simplified, Ida is the fork where one can go backwards to see where primates branched/diverged from other mammals.
I think the archaeological evidence from the earliest primates to humans is basically documented and shows perfect continuity.
Modern ape-like and monkey-like creatures are products, just like humans. Not ingredients in the lineage of our evolutionary family tree.
The formal term "missing link" is just a fond metaphorical myth, coined decades ago,...before the archaeological trail had been so well documented as it is now.

That's so great! I think Richard Dawkins has said as well that even where there will always be some missing links (as there would have to be, or the ground would be littered in fossils everywhere) there won't be any in our genetics and in the genetics of other animals once that's all recorded and properly understood.
Thanks for linking this!

Just saw this and was eager to post, but you beat me to it! This is a great discovery! Will the last person to leave the Dark Ages please turn off... oh, wait. Nevermind.

I took a good look, looked at the footage, looked at the pictures, the write ups...and am not impressed. I don't believe mankind could have survived evolution. We would have been selected against survival! I will always believe that life was created exactly how the bible said it did. In six literal days. And things keep marching right along just how we are told it would. You can have your Darwin, I'll keep my Jesus. Thank you.

Science is awesome, that's all I have to say
: 3

I know it won't change anyone's mind, but it's nice for those of us who believe in facts to have more puzzle pieces. Too cool.

Man is the running ape. How we live today notwithstanding, we evolved to chase down game that was faster than us, but couldn't cool itself efficiently.. Supremely adapted for survival IMO.

Oh my, a flurry of thoughts just went through my head so fast I had to sit down. Russell, there are so many things I would like to tell you, so many wonders I could show you. I a day of awe and marvel, how sad it must be to be blind.

Eric, thanks for the link. I’ve learned so many new things today. This is good.

Wade, do tell! All I see where ever I turn my head is the beauty of the earth that God created. No way can all this beauty that I see around me be done by evolution. And why in the world would I appreciate it?

And why do people use God's name as a swear word, and not some other religious icon? That is only ONE point, ONE sin, that so many are guilty of! Why do we use it? Why? Cause Satan wants you to and enjoys mocking God. And this monkey skeleton they've found does nothing for me. There isn't anything your going to show me that I haven't already had taught to me. I went to college as a Zoology major. I know evolution, I was taught it. But I don't accept it as truth.

I will always believe that life was created exactly how the bible said it did. In six literal days.

This is what we call cognitive dissonance - refusal of facts that don't fit into a predetermined world view. So you're telling me that no matter what evidence comes to light, you will reject it in favor of a bible story?

Why is that specific part of the bible immutable? Christians in modern society ignore uncomfortable sections of the bible at will, why is the Genesis story so much more sacrosanct than others?

I'm not religious, so I can't speak for others, but IMO evolution is undeniable. But at the same time, I don't get how that affects whether you believe in god or not. I think evolution is evident, but no one can disprove god, because no one will ever fully understand what came before time, and how the earth and all of it's unexplainable greatness was created.
Again I'm not religious, but I think there are things that happened to create earth that go infinitely beyond monkeys evolving into humans. How was earth created? How was the matter that made earth created? Is there a beginning of time? What was before time? These are questions that I feel can never be answered, so why do people have to hold on to the fact that the Bible says evolution never happened. This is an endless discussion, and a 45million year old fossilized monkey shouldn't be a surprise to anybody, religious or not.

One of the prevailing theories is that 'time' started at the moment of the big bang. That's a little more abstract than my mind normally likes to wrap it's head around, but I'm leaning towards it myself.

The Earth was created as the matter that was sent flying through space from the big bang began to clump together. As stars formed, the debris around them began to form orbits, then slowly collected together, were heated as the pressure grew in the cores and became planets. A lot can happen in billions of years. :)

As far as evolution being 'undeniable', no theory is really 'undeniable', but evolution is the only one presented that fits all the evidence that has been gathered.

As a child, I was first and foremost a scientist. My family was quite religious, and I went to church every Sunday, sang in the choir, and attended confirmation classes when I was ten. Of course I had to ask, "How can the earth have been created in six days, when we have proof of evolution, which has been happening for billions of years?" I was told that time could be measured on many scales, and I let that satisfy me. Furthermore, I believe the bible to be a collection of parables, which may to a small or to a large extent be based in truth. Believing in God doesn't preclude acknowledging scientific facts. Or vice versa.

For me that's different, but I totally get you. I've often said if I were Christian, Atheists would really hate me. They'd post links like this one and I'd say, "Yeah, I saw that!! Isn't God great?!?" LOL..
