**Serpentarium GTG Thread**Florida Residents and Visitors

ArpeggioAngel

Around Here Somewhere....
Yesterday at lunch we tossed around the idea of doing another GTG at the Serpentarium. I wanted to go ahead and start a thread so we can determine who has what dates available and start getting it organized.

Joe and I will be out of town 3/20-3/27. I have plans already in place 3/31 and 4/1.
April 21st-22nd is the next Tampa Reptile show.

But other than that I think I am free any weekend between now and the end of May.

Joe should have Sundays off now so Sunday would be the best day for us so that he could actually go this time!!

Gotta bump it...

I was just about to start a Field Trip II thread. Glad I spotted this Katie. We'll keep er goin.

If ya want...

Forgot our availability...except for the weekend of the 7,8 were good for any weekend.

Days I can't go: Sunday the 1st, Saturday the 7th. Working OT for the big bucks!

Maybe aim for April 15th?
There is a show in Tampa the 21st-22nd so I imagine Joe and I will be going there on the 22nd....

Chris, the 22nd is the Repticon Tampa show.

I wouldn't mind delaying till May, either. Whatever! Whatever anyone else wants.

Isn't it Repticon combined with the old show that used to be there or something? I don't know- I had fun at the Orlando Repticon show, and bought some supplies.

Yep, the show in April is the Florida International Reptile Expo.
Now sponsored by Repticon.
At one time, this was a great show.
Whether or not the "feud" is over, I couldn't say.
But it's got to be better than the last one in Clearwater :eek1:

To avoid further confusion (or maybe to cause even more)...there is still a F.I.R.E show (Florida International Reptile Expo) that is held in Orlando. On the Repticon website, they advise that the one they took over used to be the Florida International Reptile Show Tampa (F.I.R.S.T) - so I believe they were separate from the FIRE show that is held in Orlando. The show in Tampa was moved to Clearwater last year from Tampa and didn't get much support so that is when Repticon bought it out, moved it back to Tampa, and hopefully this year it will do better.

I wouldn't go to the Repticon shows in Orlando again - just not enough interest out there for me (not enough vendors to make up for the drive), but I think the one in Tampa will be good.

Yes, I know they keep saying they are the "original Tampa show"
Mostly it's a bunch of hype.
Yes, they bought Tony out but not before he was crashing and burning.
The Fairgrounds show IS STILL THE Tampa show and is much larger.
I have nothing against the Repticon folks. I attended their Miami show and it was great.
Still... we need to consider if encouraging a 2nd competing show in Tampa is a good idea.
Many of us believe that since Gila kept things going they deserve to have our support.
I for one will not be supporting this Tampa (Repticon) show even though I'm only 2 miles away.
Again... this IS NOT a slap at Repticon.
They are fine folks and I would have no problem being a part of another show in a city not already worked.
Tampa WILL NOT support 4 shows a year.
Take Care,
Gino

Gino, I have been thinking about your post all week. As a consumer, my feelings are the more shows, the better. The more shows, the more chances for me to spend my money on herps and supplies. I'd buy _way_ more stuff, both planned and impulse, in person than on the Internet, which would be my other option if there were fewer shows.

Tampa isn't a local show for me. I am traveling two hours to get there, and am happy to do so. I have also attended and bought supplies at both Orlando and Tampa already this year, but still need more things, and possibly even a new snake, from the next show.

I'd be happy for you guys to send on of the shows up my way, though!

Nanci,
I'm sorry to say you are the rare exception.
I have been a vendor for many years and attended areas that had more shows.
Unfortunately the statistics bear me out.
The more shows the less spent at each show.
Since putting on a show costs quite a bit what ends up resulting is neither group can continue, at least with the same quality of venue.
You must remember most folks are not as avid as we at these forums tend to be.
They will tend to feel less urgency to attend shows when they know more are just around the corner.
I've actually seen it happen more than once.
Yes, you would love having more shows (as would I) to attend but in the long run you'll end up with none or quite smaller shows where most vendors can't justify the time and costs.
I wish it were not so, but it is.
Again... Repticon are good folks as far as I can tell.
I will gladly work other shows but feel the need to protect the market here in my back yard.
I've talked to many of my friends in the biz and all but one are following the same stance.
The one that is not has extraordinary situation and was not originally planning to attend.

I certainly understand and respect your position but history does not support it.
Take Care,
Gino
