How soon before you can pop 'em? I don't wanna hurt any of 'em, but I'm really curious! Right now, I'm just guessing by looking at the tail length. Should I wait until after they shed and have a couple of meals in 'em?
 
I was going to post a similar thread. This will be my first time popping though I did try sucessfully on a known male belonging to a friend. Everyone has to start somewhere! And I've read about it and watched as many videos of it being done as I can find.

So how old should my hatchlings be before I do it?
 
I know you can pop them very early - probably even before first shed.
I don't know why - I can pop baby kings and it matches what I probe, but for the life of me - I can not pop a baby corn, always pops female for me - even when I know they are male.

But anyway - anytime after first shed is fine, and probably before.
 
Any that pop as male are boys, any that pop as female are girls until they grow up and refuse to mate! (Just ask my L-O-L-A-Lola the transgendered christmas hypo)
 
I pop them right out of the egg. I want to know what they are so I can put them in their new container and lable it.

Janine is right. If it pops male its a male. If it pops female, you don't know what you've got.

Not necessarily.
I got an MBK that "popped male" but probed female for me.
When I popped her, the scent glands were very visible and could have been mistaken for hemis.
 
I should have said - not necessarily if you aren't experienced, experienced poppers would not make the mistake I described.
 
Some things I can add:
1. Start practicing with a known male. Give that snake a shot once or twice a day. It helps you get the 'feel' for the process.
2. I typically pop after the first shed as I've had some male hemi's not pop due to the shed around the cloaca keeping them in.
3. I'll triple or quadruple or whatever . . . Popping male = male, popping female = wait till you try to breed it, it develops eggs, and then lays those eggs to confirm it's a female.
