Shipping Question...

DragonBoy

Crazy Cornsnake Breeder
I recently sold a bunch of babies to a chain store. I have to ship the babies from PA to FL which in and of itself is not a problem. However I am trying to figure out what the most practical way to ship 200 babies would be. If I use regular deli cups they would end up in 3-4 large boxes. If I use larger deli cups and ship with multiple snakes in the 9'' deli containers I could get it down to two boxes.
Someone mentioned using bags and going 50 babies to a bag (I have never bag shipped babies so this was new to me). This would get them down to 1 box thus saving on shipping. The largest order I ever got in was about 100 and they were shipped in 4 of the big deli cups 25 to cup. So I need opinions. TIA

I've seen them packed about 8-10 babies in those "frisbee" deli cups. The really flat ones. I guess they are about 6"? That way they are not bouncing around.

:roflmao: Corn snake mill! ;) inside joke

The only problem with bags or huge delis is sorting out 50 babies when they arrive. I witnessed the same person Nanci mentioned and would use the same method if I had to ship a large order...

I am not familiar with the size you mentioned. Since I have 2 weeks yet before they ship I might see if I can locate some of them and see how many I can get into a box. The upside to sorting is about 100 of these are classics and 50 are hypo A. The other 50 are a mix of anery A, Amel and a few snows and motleys thrown in for good measure. Now to call Debbie and see if Reptiles Express stocks those frisbee type containers.
Thanks for the advice.

I have come to the conclusion that I have entirely too much Hypo A blood in the house here. Seems like hypos showed up in about 35 of my 50 clutches. I did use 3 Ghost males for breeding this year which accounted for about 12 clutches, but my anery mots threw hypos in some test matings which really surprised me. So I have begun to thin out the adults and eliminate snakes that just do not fit into the grand scheme of things. I had some nice Bulls that went to Wyoming, and some Gophers that went to West Virginia. My only other breed to go are texas rats and if not sold here then they go to the show with me at the end of the month.

The typical way to ship large numbers of babies is to put about 30 or less per bag (doesn't have to be a huge bag. Some dealers will put 50 in a bag, but I never would) with LOTS of crumpled newspaper INSIDE the bag so the babies don't end up suffocating each other. Smaller bags with fewer babies is preferable to bigger bags with more babies. Just use LOTS of paper or other cushioning. You can also use crumpled (or shredded, in long, fluffy, shreds, not cross cut shreds) newspaper under, over, and between bags, for more cushioning.

You could also put 6 or 8 in a cottage cheese type container, again using crumpled paper so they can separate themselves. But that would take more space than the bags, and would not be any less stress on the snakes, IMO.

The main thing is to make sure they can separate themselves between layers of cushioning.
