Agreed. I know plenty of very peaceful Arabic and Islamic people, and they really are wonderful to be around.
 
Fort Hood is about 20 minutes from where I live. My dad used to be stationed there. Really feel for the family of the fallen. An acquaintance of mine actually passed in his sleep on Halloween night after too much partying. . . he was 20, made good grades, came from a loving family, lots of friends. It's shocking how quickly and without warning one can be taken, and this is just another heart-wrenching example of that.

Cling tight to the ones you love.
 
yeeah..I just found out that my Cousin is ALRIGHT!..Her and Her family are living down there..I was pretty worried for a bit...

As a Muslim it makes me really mad the assumptions that are made.
He has an Arabic name therefore he's Muslim (because there are no Christians etc from Arab countries of course)
He is of Jordanian descent, therefore he's Muslim (because there have never been Jordanians of any other faith of course).

Now as it turns out he is Muslim, and so everyone is now screaming terrorism.... Nothing is known about his motives, why does the media have to speculate so much before having ANY facts?
I'm not saying he was not following Islamic fundementalism, we don't know yet, but why is that so many news stations are focusing so hard on that and not on the potential for other motives such as his potential deployment, or other forms of mental illness.
It's irresponsible media again... I'll stick to the BBC thanks, I prefer facts not conjecture.

My prayers are with the families affected by this tradgedy.
I am not allowed to donate blood because of my nationality. But I would encourage anyone in the area to donate (Austin folks can do so at any Seton hospital). I would also ask that others donate too even if you are outside the main area where the wounded are being treated. When one area runs out of blood, others will supply it, which can lead to shortages there.
 
I was very upset about this. My friend just got back from Iraq today and I was so worried about him there and now I don't even feel he is safe here so I'm still worried.
 
The redcross has a website set up to check for "I'm safe" reports.
There is also a number to call... I can't find it just yet

The media here have been saying that no one knows his motives & that there is no reason to think it is because of his faith. And they have run several moving statements from US imams condemning his actions & offering prayers & condolences to the victims & their families.

I think it may vary with where you live.

It is much more likely, given what we know so far, that the guy was mentally ill, than that it is Islamic fundamentalism. That's what my local news outlets are speculating about, anyway, and I think they are right.

Blessings to all people of good will of whatever faith or no faith.

I really haven't heard anyone in the Austin area screaming "terrorism," especially not in the student community. Tends to be a very liberal area. I'm sorry you've encountered such individuals.
 
Well what is terrorism? Does one need to be a card carrying member of some crazy group to be a terrorist? Or is just acting on personal beliefs enough?:shrugs:

I think ideologic reason for violence = terrorism

regardless of membership. YMMV.

But what I have heard suggested this guy was neither a member of a crazy group nor ideologically motivated. It sounded either like he was just mentally ill or was so distressed at being deployed that he did this despicable thing to avoid deployoment.
 
I am glad to say that I have not heard much of the Islamic Fundamentalism talk in Austin (at least not in the media... there's hating folks of all faiths still here though, they had to suspend comments on a number of local newspaper articles on the shootings).

I think maybe I just happened to be watching the national media channels that were bringing it up (most of the time it was the "expert" guests).

Some of the channels were bringing up posts regarding suicide bombings by someone who was either the shooter, or shared the same name as the shooter (it's like a Joe Smith in England). But it's way too early to say if this was the guys beliefs.... we don't even know if he made the posts and if he did he's a psychiatrist, so how do we know whether he was talking about his beliefs or what he thought suicide bombers believe???

I want to thank the folks on this forum for how open you all have been to the potential for many motives. It's nice to see
