Snake as Pets from the NY Times - 1899

LoL: "Rabbits, rats, birds, frogs and fishes are the principle articles of food. And these must be kept alive for it refuses, with utmost contempt, to eat unless it kills its own prey."

Interesting article! Thanks for sharing!

That was cool! I wonder if anybody's grandpa kept snakes. I love how they already had the rudimentary rack system, and brumation all figured out. Don't know if I would bury my snakes.. (but it makes sense since they bury themselves in winter!)

Wow - that was pretty neat. I was actually just reading a random article about past presidents children and one of them in the early part of the 20th century (although I could be wrong) was a young lady who used to walk around with her pet snake... I thought that was pretty neat! I should go look up a list of presidential pets and see if I can figure out who it was...

According to wikipedia: Truman had a boa constrictor, Hoover had alligators, Roosevelt had a garter snake, and Quincy Adams had an alligator.

That was really cool. I find it amazing that 100 years ago it seems only scientists kept snakes, yet had what appears to be the precursor to modern reptile shows or public exhibitions.
Thanks for sharing that with us.

..."they possess none of the slime from which time immemorial has been synonymous with the reptile family.."

what an amazing article. They even kept hots! That's scary because back then they didn't have Miami Dade Venom 1 you know.

they didn't have Miami Dade Venom 1 you know.

Neither do keepers of hots outside of Florida. ;) I get your point, though.. That's awesome. I figured snakes hadn't been introduced into the pet trade until mid 1900's, at least! =)
