Snake ID (graphic pics)

Ok, so Jonathan and I were driving down onto campus when all of a sudden he sees a snake in the road. He stops after we pass it (didn't hit it) and we turn around to go look. This poor guy didn't look too bad outside in the dark but we could tell that he was definately hurt. Didn't know he was alive until another car ran over it's tail and it jerked :twoguns: Got a bag from some people on the porch of a nearby house and brought him home. We were going to try to save him but once we saw the extent of his injuries we knew it wasn't possible (had an organ hanging out of a gash and other scrapes along body - definately run over before we got there). I snapped these pics before we euthanized him so that it wouldn't suffer. Pretty snake and the only one I've ever seen up close in the wild (the only other was in Disney World this summer when Jonathan, my dad and I chased a black snake into the bushes in hopes of seeing it better). We think this is a black ratsnake but aren't positive - if someone could ID it for us just so we know it would be great. Also any of those familiar with snake anatomy feel free to ID that organ hanging outside the body. I felt bad for the poor thing but at least it didn't have to suffer too long (or keep getting run over).

Yeah...the pics aren't the best but it was all I could get. Small organ but I don't know enough about snake anatomy to even know what would be in the general area that it could be. I felt bad for the guy but at least it didn't have to suffer repeatedly on the road (or if it managed to cross the road - go into the yard with the dog).
