Hey everyone

This is a question for all the people out there who own snakes and other animals. How interested are your other animals about your snake/s. Because I have three cats, and one of them has started noticing Salazar, and because of this, I've come across him staring at him twice.

Does this stress the snake, I don't think Pippin (my youngest cat) has attempted to get to him, and he obviously has no idea of what to think of him. If this were a rabbit or mouse he would go mad, trying to kill them at every turn and would attempt to breach the cage.

So for all the people who own both snakes and other animals (primarily cats), could you please state your experiences and knowledge of this subect.

well, my cat is very curious about all the other animals I have and I have caught him many times on top of my lizard, snake and bird cages... my lizards and snakes just look at him... the bigger corns and boa I think wonder if he is good to eat ;) but the birds really get pissy LOL they yell, scream and click at him... telling him no and all kinds of things... but since one of my greys got ahold of his tail he stays down from their cages LOL

I am careful when I have my larger snakes out that they dont strike the cat.. and when I have my babies out, I am careful the cat doesnt get too close.... Its just a case of being careful but as for the cat watching them?? mine dont seem to care...
 
Oh good, lmao, that really made me laugh. You've put a smile on my face and relieved my worries, thank you. But yeah, I always make sure that the cats are either out or I shut the door before I do any handling.

The only reason I was worried was because Pippin is so damn fiesty that he'll attack anything, and he'll frequently kill all manner of things, including fully grown wild rabbits and hare...

Ha ha! My pigeon could kick the cr*p out of my four cats, and they were outside rat-killing bird-killing gopher-killing rabbit-killing cats! Same thing with my iguana. Cats seem to bring out strong feelings in some animals.

I had a cat that would get on top of the viv and stare down at the snake. But he never tried anything and the snakes never seemed to mind him.

I had a dog that would get very interested when I had a snake out. He got too close a few times and got his nose bit! :p

But, I have never had any problems.

I like the idea of the plywood on top of the cage... my cat used to sit on top of my critter cage like that and the screen gave way... the kingsnake inside got loose. Luckily I found him a couple of hours later.
 
I figure if my snakes were bugged by the kitty, they would either be hiding from her or striking at her. They tend to just ignore her, and as long as Pandora can't get in the snake's viv, it's just a way to keep her from sleeping all day. No harm, no foul.
 
I have a pemmie corgi that likes to lay out flat on her belly and watch my ex's snake roam around his viv that he keeps on ground level. It's pretty funny. It doesn't seem to bother the snake much, and when it starts to seem like it does, the snake retreats into a hide and the dog goes away. :p
 
HEY!!! susang?? you have my cat!! LOL thats too funny :) mine looks just like that! I first thought... when did I post a pic in here?? then it dawned on me LOL fooled my family too :grin01:
 
Besides my snakes I also keep rats, as pets and not a food source. They lived in the spare bedroom and never really seemed to notice each other. Then I got one rat, a russian blue dumbo rex named Finale. He used to love to tease the snakes! He would purposely run over to the ones in the drawers, and "dance" within view of the snake in the bottom drawer. It was as if he knew the snake couldn't get him! I swear, that ratty was laughing! He died in January 2006, at the age of 23 months of respiratory failure.

I still miss that silly lil guy :)
 
If I am holding my snake and she sees the cat walk across the room, she will freeze for a few seconds but I dont think it stresses her. She does the same thing if its my wife or if my wife is holding her and I come near. I dont think they really understand being noticed by another animal unless that animal comes into contact or makes movements the corn decides is threatening.

Makes me laugh too, so you have nothing to be sorry about. :) We named that snake "Goliath Birdeater". :grin01:
 
I have 5 dogs in the house, and 4 of them don't even notice there are snakes in the room with us. The 5th is LadyBug, a Cocker Spaniel. She really likes little animals and birds, but not in a good way. :eek1: The first night I brought Noodles home, I woke up at 3:00 in the morning to find her sitting at the foot of the bed, in the dark (nightlight on), staring at the tank! Very funny! She did that to the birds for 3 months. I don't trust her a bit! My African Grey (rescue from work), is also in the room, and it's hilarious--the first time Noodles danced against the glass and Webster saw her, she let out a loud "AAACK" and fell right off her perch to the bottom of the cage! She was fine, but I wish you could have seen it. Now she notices from across the room, but seems OK with it.

The picture of the snake in the bird cage reminds me of an ad that is running in the current vet journals for insurance. The doctor is reading a chart, paying no attention to what is going on right beside him, and the large albino python next to him is slowly easing it's way into a cage where a little Yorkie is sitting! An effective ad I would say! :)
 
Oh my cats have no interest in Sammy the Snake at all. I mean look at this photo. It's like they don't even know there's a snake in the house. :roflmao:
