So very upset

Chromatic Corns

Just one more
This particular clutch was a series of unfortunate events. It started when 2 snakes met accidentally during a photo shoot. I had allowed my 10yr old to help me while taking pics. I handed him a snake to put back and instead of telling me he didn't remember which bin it came out of, he put it back in the bin I was using to hold the girls before their pics. So my ultramel anery male locked with my coral ghost. Both only 2012's and she was no where near breeding size. The male released pretty quickly once discovered and flopped around for a while with his hemipenes hanging out. I thought maybe he hadn't been able to complete his task and all would be fine. Nope, she became gravid. 6 eggs, the last one egg bound her and I had to aspirate it. She recovered nicely though. Out of the 5 remaining eggs, 2 have gone to the hatching stage. The first split it's egg this morning but was still in the egg so I figured I had plenty of time. When I woke 3 hrs later (I work night shift so I was sleeping during the day) the egg was empty. I searched a little and couldn't find it so I figured it was buried in the substrate. I pulled the bin the rest of the way out and in doing so I killed the baby :crying::crying::crying: He was wedged along the top of the bin and when I pulled it out he was crushed between the shelf and tub. None of the other 25 babies had done that and I wasn't expecting him to be there. I had seen the holes in the substrate and thought for sure he was buried. I am devastated. My fiance' doesn't "get" my snake obsession so I am crying to you guys where I know I will be understood. The other egg still looks good but hasn't been slit yet. I know this breeding wasn't suppose to happen but the fact that I killed it is just so awful.

I am so sorry. I completely know what you are going through. It sucks! And worse when no one in the house understands your pain and frustration.

Oh man, that blows! That last baby is going to be extra special now.
Being careful when opening and closing tubs, like you I learned that the hard way. I had a pair of snakes for sale with a special price on both, and I had someone who wanted them paypal me the payment and was all set to ship them out to him. The night before, being somewhat OCD when it comes to shipping, I was doing a check on the two snakes, making sure they would both fit ok in the containers I was going to put them in and still have room for a cool pack in the box and be ready to get packed up the next morning. I noticed one of the tubs was a little hard to close but didn't realy think much of it, sometimes the racks can be tighter on one side, so I just pushed the tub in and went to sleep.
Well the next morning I woke up went to pack up the box to be shipped, and discovered why the rack felt so tight- the male of the pair had its head in the wrong spot and had gotten its head wedged and crushed between the rack and tub, it was dead and its head was flat. I not only felt horrible at myself but also had to contact the buyer, tell him what had happened to his (already bought and paid for) snake, offer a few replacement alternatives and still get the box with the female out to fed ex. It took me a long, long time to stop feeling guilty and mad at myself. I'm just lucky the buyer was so understanding.

Oh, Jen that's awful I am so sorry that happened to you an your poor buyer :( thank you everyone for your kind sympathy. I still feel awful and guilty this morning, but not alone.

So sorry for your loss..

Years well more like decades ago I used all lid-less tubs. had a few hatchling snakes pinched but survive and a few escapees. Now all my racks except one hold tubs with lids. The 1 lid-less rack holds 4 66qt tubs and our 1300g Honduran has figured out how to open it.
Snakes will snake in the most unfortunate ways.

Sorry you learned this hard lesson. I no longer use lidless tubs. I've also heard of persons sliding lidless tubs in and suddenly the snakes head pops out of the tub and gets snapped off. I know myself well enough to have changed to lidded tubs what-with my limited attention span.

I would like to convert all my racks to ones with lids. I have 2 that are lidded and 2 that aren't. I happen to be using a bin from one of the ones that aren't as my incubator. Worked great until this :( Until I have the funds to upgrade the lidless 2 I am going to be very very vigilant. The second egg has started to pip and it looks to be a ghost :)

I iknow how lidless racks work (have seen them) are the lidded ones just more like a shelf? Or does the top (underside of the shelf above) still work as a way of keeping the lids on?

(((((hugs)))) to you for your baby. Don't beat yourself up over it, it was a complete accident and we all know that accidents DO happen. I am so sorry this happened, just chalk it up to a learning experience.
