Hey everyone!
Im brand spanky new and just stopped by to introduce myself.
My name is John and I'm a 35 year old Father of 2.
I just ordered my new Blizzard corn Snake and need some help naming him.
I have it down to 3 names:

1.Powder

2.Ozzy

3.Raven

I'm kinda leanin toward Raven but Ozzy is always cool to me.
Maybe some of you can list your snakes name?
Or am I tool for even naming mine?
Anyway thanks in advance

Well...nevermind :grin01:

Only kidding:D And here I thought you were going to need advice about feeding or temps or something of that sort. I have to admit I'm not great with naming animals. Usually takes me quite a while and, at least with snakes, I tend to go with names that suit their personalities (and sometimes their colors).

Personally, since you asked for opinions, I would throw the name Powder out the window and never look back. Of the two remaining names, I would go with Ozzy. Raven just doesn't do it for me, and especially not for a Blizzard (even if you're going for that opposite thing).

Don't know if that really helps at all. :shrugs:

I agree...Powder is kinda fluffy, more for a Persian kitty. :) Raven...umm, that'd be nice if the snake is black, unless you are going for the antonym. But, I do like Ozzy...and since you do too, I think it's a done deal. :)

Is this your first snake?

Thanks much! Ozzy it is.
Yea this is my first snake.I think my eyes are gonna fall out from all the research Ive been doing. This site rocks!!
Only prob so far is my local petstore didnt have a heating pad(only lamps).
So im gonnna try a few stores in the am.
Thanks again for the advice and ill be sure to post some pics soon.

By no means am I an expert, but I chose to get a lamp because I'd read that heating pads & UTHs (under tank heaters) & especially hot rocks weren't recommended for snakes because of burns to their belly. I don't know what a heating pad would be like for the snake & perhaps it is ok, but I went the lamp route & it seems to work beautifully in my tank. When my little guy (or girl, still out on that one) gets too warm, he heads over to his water area or one of his hides on the cooler side & curls up by that to cool down. I do use an UTH with my leopard geckos, and they've done fine with it, so I don't know for a snake. A friend uses heat tape for her snakes (a corn & a ball python), but I don't know how that works.

I know what you mean about info-overload. I've been going to my local herp society's meetings and reading magazines & books & the Internet & especially all of the info on this site for awhile now, and my eyes could fall out...and if you gave me a quiz, I'm sure I'd fail because it's now all a-jumbled. If only animals could talk, then it'd all be so much easier, wouldn't it? Apparently it must all make sense eventually or corn snakes wouldn't be so popular, so there's hope for the both of us. :)

Good luck with Ozzy! :)

There's no problem with using a UTH. Yes, they can burn a snake if you don't regulate it or take precautions. The same is true of most heat lamps as well.

Use a thermostat or rheostat with a UTH and you'll be fine. Or you can use ceramic tile to help dissipate the heat. However, I would still recommend at least a rheostat if using a tile.

Consider the members of this forum and the ratio of UTH users to the number of "My snake got burned" threads there are. I can't remember ever seeing too many burned snake threads. So as long as they are used correctly there is little danger of harming your snake.

Welcome to the site, LittleJohn! Of course you're not a "tool" for naming your snake-- would you be one if you named your dog? No! It's a pet, same as any other. :) I think choosing a name IS hard.. but seems like you've got yours now. As long as you like the name, you're all set.

Cegninedorf--
My research has said to go with a UTH.. most people use 'em. I'm sure someone will see this and tell the exact reasons.. but you've gotta be careful when you give advice to someone as new as you are to corns.

Alyndria, that's why I began with the disclaimer that I'm not an expert, so as to be careful with the advice I was giving & hopefully get someone else to verify the answer...and in all that I've read, I was told to go with a lamp. I was always told that anything under the tank for a snake was a no-no because of belly burns. I do stand corrected that it is also acceptable to use a UTH.

I'm sorry-- I shouldn't have jumped on your back so quickly. I know you didn't state it like "This IS absolutely the way it should be done".. but apparently I didn't even read it well enough to notice you pretty much said "this is what works for me".

'Tis ok...so, LittleJohn, how's Ozzy? :)

Not a problem...I *am* hesitant to give advice on snakes because I am so new, and not just to this forum, but in general, and I was just trying to caution because of what I've read. Learn something new everyday, n'est-ce pas? :)

So, LittleJohn, did you receive Ozzy? As handsome as expected? :)

Hi everyone, I'm LittleJohn's brother. I am the one who got him into the whole Corn Snake obsession I now have. We ordered them from moreptiles.com together and they should be here around 12:00 tomorrow if everything goes well. I think I'
m gonna name mine Clorox but it's definately not a definate name lol. This is my first snake and I cant wait for the little man to get here so I could get him settled into his new home... gotta go finish getting all my supplies for tomorrow, Peace!!

Thanks so much for the advice.
I ended up finding and buying a exo-terra heat pad.
Last thing I think I need is a thermomitor(spelling?)
But after research on that not sure if I should get a digital or regular one or where to put it. :shrugs:

Ok, I think I'm safe with recommending this...:)

I bought a combination digital thermometer/hyrgrometer (to measure both temp & humidity) and it should have a little probe with a metal tip to be able to get an accurate reading of the surface temp. I got mine off of eBay, but I've heard of others recommending them from Wal-Mart for +-$7.

And, Clorox? Well, if you both ordered the snakes together, and one is Ozzy, shouldn't the other be Harriet or Sharon (depending upon your generation :p)? :)

I'm pretty happy with my setup, I just went out and bought a UTH, a thermometer with a probe, a hygrometer (analog, not digital unfortunately) and a thermostat... I'm in the process of testing them out and so far it's working AWESOME.. I set up the two probes right against the bottoms of the glass to makes sure the thermostat works properly, when I trust it, then I'll just move the thermometer probe as I feel necessary to take the temp of the air on the cool side, warm side, glass, whichever. The thermostat cost me 40 bucks but money is no object for my Clorox.

P.S. Sharon would be funny but he's a male and I wont put him through that torture,,, all the other corns would pick on him for having a girly name lol.

Oh, and my brother will be getting the same tomorrow, right after we get out of work... damn, I just realized, we live in the same building, work at the same company, and now have matching snakes.. its bad enough that we look alike. The only thing is that I'm 22... 10 year difference.

I wonder what your significant other might think about that. ;)

(Although, I've already spent a pretty significant amount on my cats, geckos & snake this summer...but, alas, that's just what happens & my boyfriend hasn't complained yet, though he did talk me down from 3 snakes to only 2...:) )

Lol, I do have a girlfriend who said she will never come into my apartment again if I get a snake but I think once she sees it, she will fall in love with it as I did. The money might bother her a little but after its all setup, thats it, I'm done, I just need to buy food and provide fresh water. Not like her hamster who she's buying new toys for, and different sort of snacks and vitamins and has to clean the cage once a week so that means more bedding. It's more of the issue that its a snake, not so much the money. My mother on the other hand is mad at me for spending so much for a snake and supplies, but it doesnt really bother her that its a snake.... which shocked the poopoo outta me.
