As far as reading the temperature on the basking side, do you put the thermometer probe under the substrate, right against the glass, or on top of the substrate??

You put the thermometer probe under the substrate on top of the glas directly over the UTH. You can adhere it there with a hot glue gun so it doesn't be pushed around as your baby burrows :)

What Stefanie said is where my probe is. Works great. I just posted a few pictures of her. Just view my profile and go to albums. She's a beauty :)

Thank you :) I look forward to the years to come of caring for this awesome animal. Supposedly they're addictive, so I'll try not to acquire too many ;) Good luck to you

No glue gun, will tape work/be dangerous to the snake?

I believe tape does work, however you have to get some tape that's not dangerous to your snake's scales, like masking / painters tape, and that seems to be drying out and getting porous because of the heat. So you'll have to exchange it every time you change the substrate, for example. Also, some tape doesn't work as well because dust from the substrate will get under it and loosen it up. Suction cups seem to work as well!

But you want to measure the heat the mat radiates, so if your snake burrows and lays on top of the mat she won't get burned

I have a ZooMed rheostat and when I have the UTH plugged in, I just turn it down to low and the temps are good (84-88(at most)) and before I bought the snake I set up the tank and plugged in the UTH to see how high it goes and I got a reading of 105 degress F. So I bought the rheostat and it works great. I also put some paper towels on the surface of the glass right over the UTH, but under the substrate, just as an extra precautionary measure.

Maybe I'll have to get a glue gun then stefanie...

I'm using a lamp dimmer to lower the UTH right now Rain...it works, but it's hard to get right around the temperature I want

I prefer rheostats over thermostats, since a failing thermostat can make your UTH heat on full power, which can be fatal to the snake if not discovere din time. Failing rheostats will shut oo the power going to the UTH (had several cases of that, all did), which won't hurt the snake, he might just throw up a mouse if he happens to have eaten recently and the temp gets way low.
