Strax, my Giant African Bullfrog

Just realized, I'd never posted pics of Strax, my most recent acquisition here! I picked him up during the Boxing Week sales at the end of December. He was about six months old at the time, and is just so much fun! He's grown some since then, I haven't measured him, keep forgetting to, but I'd say he's about 6-7 inches long, and almost as wide when he's sitting on his belly, lol, and he weighs 363 grams as of yesterday, more than Trillian did at her last weigh in, and she's four feet long! He's a ton of fun, loads of personality, but definitely not a pet to handle a lot or play with. These guys are the second largest frog in the world, and they have a lot of very large and sharp teeth, and will lunge and snap at anything that moves in front of them, lol!

Anyway, here he is!

About a week after I brought him home, moving him into his permanent viv. I was being extra cautious with the gloves until I knew how he responded to being handled, lol! He really puffed him up in the first pick, lol, doesn't like being picked up much! :p

And a lousy pic of him glaring at me from his bin while I cleaned his viv yesterday, he was NOT amused, LOL.

And just for fun, my favourite video showing WHY you keep your fingers away from these guys' mouths, LOL

Hopefully these work this time!

I love his name :) (Alli's comment was that "It's perfect". She also thinks you need a GTP named Vastra)

Would an African bullfrog be a good demonstration animal? The leopard frogs aren't-they're too nervous and fragile, but Strax looks very calm.

I have a corn named Madame Vastra, will that do? :)

They're pretty calm for the most part, Strax isn't a fan of being handled, but that's mostly because I rarely do it. I've seen a lot of videos of very calm adults. I'd say they would be good as long as you can ensure no one will dangle fingers in front of them, because they WILL snap at anything that they see moving, and they have a lot of very large and sharp teeth and can deliver very painful and bloody bites. Strax has been known to lunge straight across his 18" wide viv to try to get my fingers through the glass if he sees me wiggling them at him, lol, but I can handle him without issues so long as I grab him from behind.
