Stump and Tequila! My Beardies!

MinLynn

What blonde chick?!
Since they have names now,and I'd like a thread where I can just add pics too, I figured I'd throw some pics up of my new beardies!

Tequila! Can you tell he doesn't like his picture taken?

And poor little Stump. He's such a sweet-heart and would love to just sit on my shoulder all day long if I let him. When I go up to his glass he hobbles on over to me!

that first picture is a classic!
And Stump is soooooo cute! is he perfectly healthy besides his leg? he does look it im just curious! :)

We're not sure yet on Stump. According to his PO she claims he is the same age as Tequila. I don't know if I should believe that. He looks like there is no possible way he is even close to a year old. She said that the vet told her he has some kind of growth deformity and that's why he is so small. Me? I think he's a juvy and for some reason she didn't want us to know that. There were quite a few things she was doing wrong with him, like feeding him the same size crickets as Tequila. For now I'm going to treat him as if he is a juvenile and keep an eye on him. He does move around slowly but he does sleep a lot! He's very affectionate and loves to be handled. Tequila likes to be handled but only for so long before he's trying to leap out of your hands or off your shoulder. Not Stump. Stump would stay in your hands forever!

Tequila is GORGEOUS!
and awww look at little stumpy! What a cutie, give him a cricket for me! <3

sounds like there both in excellent hands! :)

Stump looks a bit better with the old shed off. I hope he pulls through, and Tequila looks very handsome.

I'm not to sure I would believe her when she says the vet amputated his arm. If she did take him to the vet he probably has MBD and not a birth deformity. I really think the two were probably housed together when Tequila was smaller and he probably attacked Stump and either bit off his arm or injured it enough it was loss, which is quite common with Beardies. Also if they were housed together Tequila would have been able to get more of the food which would stunt Stump's growth. I had an injuried Beardie that was 1 year old and was the same size as Stump so it is possible the are around the same age.

Wow! Very interesting to know! Well, here is a question....Did your little one grow to be any bigger and how long did he make it? I mean, if Stump is getting the proper care now,can he grow and can he make it? I worry about the little guy and I certainly don't want anything more to happen to him,but I am prepared for the worst.

Mine lived for a few months, and he was doing well and did grow a bit but then one day I came home and he was on his back having seizures or something. I never really figured out what happened.

The reason he is sleeping so much now is because he is skinny and probably was dehydrated but I think as long as Stump starts eating and you give him baths he will pull through and start grow to a normally size. You just have to baby him for awhile and hopefully he'll start getting better.

Right now I'm going to treat him as if he is a juvy. He never ate cricketts before but I'm guessing that's because she was feeding him the largest crickets. So basically he had a diet of greens, calcium, and some pre-packaged juvenile food(she gave us all this). She never gave them baths. She just spritzed them with a water bottle every day. I don't have my hopes up,but, I'm going to do the best I can for him! Matt only planned on picking up Tequila but then last minute she said we could only take Tequila if we agreed to take Stump, too. How could we not when you see that little face and watch his little hobble?!

Awww they are too cute all tucked in.

When I tuck my boy in he turns himself around and hides his head under the blanky with his tail sticking out, lol.

Awwww! They're so cute! And Stump is so adorably pitiful. Good luck getting him back on his "feet" (or lack thereof...lol)! He'll be your best friend by the time he's nice and plumped up again... Congrats on the adorable pick-up!

"Growth deformity" my a$$!!!! I bet $100 that poor baby has Metabolic Bone Disorder... My boy had it, too, when we got him... He wouldn't even move from his perch--I had to hold his food dish up there for him so he would eat. He was emaciated because he wouldn't eat the hard pellet diet they had for him. He was dehydrated, because he didn't get baths and they didn't give him water... :shrugs: By the way, Katie, it sounds like the one that had the seizures probably had MBD, too... One of the symptoms of really far advanced MBD is seizures.

Min, it would probably be a good idea to take Stump to a good vet and get their take on it. At the very least, he's in good hands now, and I'm sure he'll flourish and thrive for you. =)

Thanks, that was one of the things I narrowed it down to. I gave him calcium but the guy before me didn't take good care of him, but he ate great and seemed very healthy then bam he was having seizures. It was really upsetting to watch and I tried calling my vet but they wouldn't see him that day and by the next morning he was gone.

Aw, I'm really sorry to hear that! I hate specialty vets that work only a few days a week just because they CAN. Even if you don't have a whole lot of patients, you think they would at least be willing to come in on their days off to treat "emergency" cases...

They do look so cute tucked in! I think I've only missed two or three nights the whole time I've had Isabel!

Well, Stump has refused his cricketts today. I'm not suprised. I'm going to try making him a mash of the juvenile pellets with some greens to see if he'd like that. He did get a full on bath today and he seemed to enjoy that. That's the first time I've actually seen him "run" around! He didn't even mind the toothbrush until I got to his belly. All the old shed is off and he's sleeping right now under his light. Poor guy!

Congrats, on the new additions!
Tequila is beautiful!
Poor li'l Stump. Such a cutie. Aside from the missing forearm, he looks underweight. Am sure you will give him the best of care and I really hope he pulls through for you.

Well, I got a litte bit of a "mash" I made into Stump yesterday. Kindda had to force him to eat and it was only a little tiny bit but it was something! Today, he is a little perkier so far! He's actually got his little head up off the floor and has been awake for an hour now looking around! Trust me, that's something! Usually, the longest he's awake is a couple minutes at most and his head is ALWAYS laying on the floor. Not today, though! Keeping my fingers crossed that I can work a miracle with him.

Congrats on the rescues Min! Poor little Stump, I sure hope he pulls through for you. He's in great hands now. Have you tried any squash? I give my Ani that winter squash that comes in a 'brick' in the frozen section at the grocery store, the puree'd stuff that costs about a buck. Its messy, but he loves it! Maybe Stump would be able to eat that easily?

Here's a feeding mixture I really like. My vet told me to syringe it in, opening the dragon's mouth from the very front, so as not to damage the teeth. I use this if Isabel loses her appetite from coccidiosis treatment.

From beardeddragon.org: http://www.beardeddragon.org/articles/parasitecare/

If, during this treatment period, your dragon has stopped eating entirely, or if you are concerned that he is dropping too much weight, you can syringe feed him a formula which is super nourishing until he starts eating again on his own.

To make this formula, you will need to purchase a tube of "Jumpstart", which is a caloric supplement and reptile appetite stimulant that comes in a paste form. This product is made by Zilla Reptile, and can sometimes be difficult to find in Pet Stores. If you aren’t able to purchase it locally, you can purchase it online at ReptileSupply.com. It can be found under reptile appetite stimulants. This product was formerly manufactured by ESU Reptile, who have now sold the rights for it to Zilla.

Mix about a teaspoonful of the “Jumpstart” paste with a jar of Gerber #2 Chicken Baby Food, a pinch of your beardie’s vitamins and of his calcium supplement, and some Pedialyte (like you give small children when they have diarrhea). Mix everything up but the Pedialyte, and then add just enough Pedialyte so that it flows easily through the tip of the syringe. I would recommend using the Cherry or Orange flavored Pedialyte, since the unflavored Pedialyte tastes really unpleasant!

Try to get two or three teaspoonfuls of this formula into him at least once a day (or a smaller amount, if your dragon is still a small baby). This amount will provide him with the protein that he requires (from the baby food), and all the vitamins that he needs (from the Jumpstart) until he starts feeling better and begins to eat again on his own.
