Summer Reading

Thought it might be fun and interesting to share summer reading plans. In addition to plans for several spiritual/philosophical books, which I'll keep to myself, I have plans to re-read a few novels, and read a few new ones. So here goes:

1. The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck: Tied for my favorite book of all time, and from my favorite author. Hoping to discover some new aspects of the book, it's characters, or its themes.

2. The Book Thief, Markus Zusak: Best book I've read in a long time. Narrated by Death, it's about an orphaned German girl during WWII who learns to read and befriends a Jew whom her foster father is hiding in their basement.

3. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith: Haven't read it. But I love a good "coming of age" story.

4. It, Stephen King: I've only read a few of his books, but they were pretty good. In fact, The Shining totally blew away the movie. That movie doesn't even touch the book, in fact (IMO)

So, what are your plans?

IMO Stephen King movies don't even come close to the books...the ONLY SK movie I like is The Shining with Jack Nicholson. The rest are meh. I have been reading alot of Clive Barker lately and am excited to read The Lords of Salem by Rob Zombie. (I'm kind of a horror/zombie/gore buff lol)

Great topic! I'm a reading fanatic, and go through a couple of novels a week.

I like a lot of crime fiction, and medical thriller stuff. Some authors I like:

Robin Cook, Michael Palmer, and Tess Gerritsen (all M.D's), as well as Patricia Cornwell, Lawrence Sanders, John Grisham and Iris Johansen. Too many others to remember off the top of my old head!

Here's a short list of classics from Reader's Digest. I've only read a couple of them, and plan to work my way through the rest over the summer.

Great list, Insomniac. I've read some of those. Only read Catcher in the Rye about 12 times, give or take...even named my first boy Holden, after the protagonist. BTW, a couple novels a week? I'm jealous!

I love SK and have read IT three times, ENJOY!
With the kids it's hard to get reading in, but I have some Buddhist books I have lined up and also want to dive into SK's Dark Tower books. I go through phases where I'll read, then crochet, then mindlessly watch TV. I really love reading though. Great thread!!

RZ has a movie also by the same name which I want to see also :D Looks pretty good. The Dark Tower series is really good! and Tess Gerritsen is one of my favorite authors!! I love how detailed her books are. I can usually read one of her books in a day or two if I just sit down and do nothing but read. One of my other new favorite authors (if you want super zombie/gore) is Brian Keene. LOVE his stuff!!! I get sucked into his books and by the time I know it I'm done and it's after midnight lol!

By God you will not be disappointed!!! I will warn you thought the book is different than the movie was (the movie left a lot out). I would also recommend reading "The Stand" and "Needful Things" if you get the chance.

So far my plans are

1. Game of Thrones Series by George R.R. Martin: I need to finish them, I am on book three now.

2. The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker

3. Joyland by Stephen King: When it comes out.

4. 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King

5. Firestarter by Stephen King

That is what is on my list for now, but once I'm done with those I will undoubtedly add more.

I second Needful Things. Really creepy book!

I don't have any specific reading plans; I just randomly check out things from the library.

I'm a fan of Stephen King, but stopped reading his books after he announced his "retirement". Not a conscious choice, I just don't feel like reading them. I will one day.

I don't make a list of things to read, just grab something and go, but I want to catch up on Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden book. I absolutely love those.

Haven't read any of those, so will have to add them to my list. I've read a few Stephen King novels, but most are really creepy. I read at night, so there I am at 1:00 in the morning, all creeped out, and making sure I have extra bullets! And then my dog will go over to the closed closet door, and start growling . . . I guess I better stick to Archie comics. :(

Oh, and if anyone hasn't checked out the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, try to, if you get a chance. They are really funny!

My gram read The Shining by herself at night and ended up driving all the way into town just to be around other people lol. Everyone else had gone camping or something so she was home alone.

RoseRed: The Hellbound Heart is AWESOME! Have you checked out his Books of Blood?! I have a photo I am going to send you :D

I started watching game of thrones ages ago and am up to date with the programme so I started reading the first book and love it! And I have just started watching the first season again and im trying to keep up with the book but some episodes overlap into bits I haven't read yet but remember watching and im kind of confusing myself but yeah... game of thrones is great :D two books on my to-read list are the zoo (anyone read it?) and the fever tree. Any one here on goodreads? Well this is my long to-read list and I add to it a lot !

I found John Grishams the Runaway Jury in my dads collection the other day, is that a good one?
