Tarantula question

Can they all climb glass? I was at PetCo a while back and one walked right up the glass of its tank in front of me and my sister. I admit... it gave me the creeps. But can they all do that? Or only certain species?

The one I had when I was a teenager could walk up anything- glass, walls, etc. Can't most spiders do that?

I never witnessed my terrestrial spidies (chile rose tarantulas) walking up glass/plastic/any vertical structure... I thought only the arboreals could do that, like ornamentals etc.

Trust me I cleaned out the tarantula cage at school. It was a chile rose tarantula. They CAN climb up glass. Most spiders can climb up anything.

I was relocating her from a 5 gal to a 10 gal. The poor girl's cage hadn't been cleaned in 5 YEARS! She had a huge tunnel system built up. She went into hiding so I had to locate where she was and then slowly collapse all the tunnels around her. She was really po'ed at me and I had to use the old fashion spider catching method aka jar and lid. So I just transfered her over and shut the lid really quick. Gotta love that jar and lid method. :p

I've never seen any of mine climb clean glass, but let them build up any kind of film... anything for those little feet to hang on and they can stick like glue.

They almost never move fast enough to run away from you.

You know... you've been very interested in the Tarantulas lately. Maybe you should just take the plunge, get one, and learn from there. ;)

To answer your question, I just put Petey in a little plastic critter keeper while I replace the substrate. Other than that, I just spot clean the same as with the snakes.

I go back and forth constantly on this subject. I don't know though. I have a pretty serious fear of spiders. I wouldn't want to buy anything I cannot care for in the best possible way.

Visit them regularly in the pet store? Find a friend with one?

In all honesty, I can read all the caresheets on the planet, get tons of advice from everyone I know, but the thing that really makes me confident with the animal is actually watching it and taking care of it. I guess I'm just a "hands on" learner. :shrugs: I maintain there is NOTHING like spending time with the animal to gain confidence.

I agree with Jenni however, it is good that you know your limits too. Not every person is right for every pet they find interesting. For example, I am a wolf fanatic but I am not the right owner for one or a hybrid of one. I still hope to be directly involved in their conservation one day but until then I have to study from afar.
