Temperatures through paper towel

I'm trying to get my temperatures just right before bringing home my new baby, but I'm a little confused about how to get the right hot side temp when using paper towel. I assume when using aspen the snake can borrow as low as it wants to reach the higher temps, but with paper towel its not really an option.

Right now I have my probe under the paper towels, directly on the glass above the UTH and it's reading 83. However, I have a second probe on top of the paper towels (inside the hot side hide) and it's only reading 74. Should I up the temp of the UTH, or leave it how it is? :shrugs:
 
How many paper towels are you using as I can't see a few layers as being that good of a heat insulator. You may want to double check your probes to make sure they are reading accurately.
 
I had 3 layers and I was reading 83 on the glass right above the UTH, and only 72 on top of the paper towels in the hide. I took one layer off to see how that would be and upped the thermostat to 84. It's not 84 on the glass under the paper towels and 77 on top of them and in the hide. Does this sound alright?
 
I'm pretty surprised at the paper towels making that much of a difference in temps too, especially inside the hide, which should help trap whatever warmth does get through the paper towels. What is the ambient temp in the room?
 
Paper towels will produce quite a bit of difference when using multiple layers. Since each layer is solid, and paper towels don't really conduct heat well, most of the UTH heat gets trapped under them at the glass level. Some heat penetrates, and using fewer layers definitely helps.
 
So does my set up sound ok then? It's only around 77 right now in the hide, but I don't feel comfortable turning up the UTH any higher. It's between 84-85 as it is. I figured if he wanted it hotter he could go under the paper towels, or if not say in the hide.
 
Yes it sounds good. Like someone else mentioned your snake may very well make it's way under the paper towels. The temperature on the glass over the UTH is always the one to use, even if there is a pile of aspen (or other substrate) on top of the probe. They can burrow if they want more warmth, but if they just want to burrow to hide more and the temp is to high it can cause problems :)
