The Noblesville, IN Reptile show is awesome!

Unfortunately, I am much too impulsive for my own good.
Had a great time meeting Cynthia (maxfox) and her husband Jon again. I also got to meet Steph (groomingdiva) and her friend Erica. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a photo taker. I did snap a pic of Steph and her new purchase. She needs a 12-step program!!! I'll download those shots after she posts what she got.

Meanwhile, I did something I swore I'd never do again. I purchased an animal with no prior research. I did take up an awful lot of the vendor's time, and he answered all my questions and gave me a ton of useful tips and care info. I also bought the book he recommended. All the other things needed I already had in my possession.

So, here's Matthew's newest pet. (name, TBA)
Sorry for the horrid pic. My cell takes horrible pics and the creature was quite active, even in the hands of his vendor.

He came home and immediately munched his food, took a drink of water and inspected his new digs. I absolutely love this little guy. I so DARE the cat to try and mess with him!!! :grin01:

Heather, is that your cat and hedgie?? I knew Anne had them, but I forgot that you did as well! I'm so glad. As much time as I spent with the guy, and all the questions I asked, I forgot to ask how often you change the cage. The book says every other day. Is that true? And how deep should I keep his bedding? Do they burrow in it?

After a snack and a drink, he went into his hide and went to sleep. I love that photo. The book I got shows them around dogs and cats, but I'd like to get used to me before dealing with the rest of the zoo.

I just heard Matthew telling his brother that this is his best day ever!

Yeah I don't post too much about mine, she is getting old (about 5 years) and has gotten very cranky in her old age so I don't take her out much for pics or vids.

I don't know about changing the bedding every other day, I guess maybe it depends on the type of bedding :shrugs: I use corn cob bedding, there's a bit of controversy surrounding it's use in the hedgie world, particularly with male hedgies, but I have a female and have never had a problem with it. It's what the breeder used, and I continued to use it, and haven't had a problem in 5 years. I change it about once a week, give or take, though I do spot cleanings here and there. If you can litter train the hedgie (mine never got the concept of the litter box,) you might even be able to get away with longer. I don't think any bedding has to be super deep, I know some people even use animal-safe newspaper, which would probably have to be changed more regularly. I've also heard of people using cut-to-size pieces of fabric like vellux blanket...in this case they usually make several cage-size pieces and change out every day, and then wash and reuse the pieces.

Aww, he's so cute! The breeder just suggested aspen, and of course I have tons of that, so I didn't even ask about any other type of bedding. I'll have to read up on litter box training. that would be wonderful. He's only 8 weeks old, so I'm hoping that is young enough to mold him into those types of habits.

I am so in love with his little face. I'm worse than Matthew. I'm dying to take him out, and Matthew keeps telling me to leave him alone so he can settle in.

LOL! Thanks, Eric. I've been teaching Matthew that the natural progression in life is that I take care of him when he's young, and he takes care of me when I'm old(er). He says he wants to be a vet, and I'll take every opportunity to fuel that desire. He's so over the moon right now. He wants to be the very best "animal vet/zookeeper/paleontologist in the whole world!!!!11"

Have I mentioned that his first word was "scholarship?" :grin01:

Wow, that's wicked cool!...Kind of a funny question, but do those spikes hurt to touch or is it just like fur?.

If you startle 'em when you pet 'em, they're like oversized needles. Still kinda sharp, but they don't hurt. I got quilled by one the other day in a pet store.

Robbie, you must have thicker skin than me, babes. I think they hurt like *bleep*! The guy told me not to handle him with gloves so he could get used to my scent, but when I moved him from his box to his cage, he curled up and I ended up dropping him (two inches) into his food box. Fortunately, he took the opportunity to snarf down some worms before he realized a total dufus had purchased him!!!

They *can* hurt, if they want them to. When they are relaxed they are flacid and you can pet them as normal. When they get PO'd they puff up and stand them up erect. The ones to watch out for most are the ones on the top front of their forehead, they like to headbut and try to stab you haha.

They look pretty pointy. I'm assuming they don't shoot out like porcupines though lol. That would not be good!...Very cute though. I had no idea they stayed so small..

Lori,

It was so good to meet you. You are the coolest mom!! I just got all my new kids settled in and will post pics in a few days. The one I'm most excited about is the Az. mtn. king that I snagged. I've been drooling over them online and never thought I would see one in person.

STEPH!!! :wavey: It was awesome to meet you as well, although I don't think we should go to many shows together! Definitely bad influences!
I didn't see your king...did you get him after I left? Hey, did you win anything in the raffle??
