Am I missing anything.. other then the snake ( which I will be getting in a few weeks ) I keep thinking I am missing something. :awcrap:

20g long tank
lid
aspen
decor items
bowl
2 tissue box hides
heat mat
thermometers
thermostat
ceramic tile ( UTH to protect table)
hanging light ( room stays too dark without one)
2 months of frozen mice

*need to get lid hooks

I would buy the Critter Cage with the built-in sliding locking lid.

And probed thermometers, not stick-on.

I got the regular 20g long n the digital ones.. I hate those stick on ones they suck. I was gonna get one of those critter cages they didn't have any in stock.. and amazon wanted almost $60 just for shipping.. so I got the 20g long on sale when petco had their buck a gal thing running last month. Hopefully that will be ok for a while, I will be saving up and getting one of the PVC cages in a few months, and that 20g will be a hospital tank.

I use 20 longs (not the sliding lid lock type), just make sure you either have some good lid clips or something nice and heavy to hold it down (I'm paranoid about the screen becoming weak/breaking so I use lid clips instead of putting something on top)

I use 20L with screen lids for my corns, my hoggie and rubber boa have the sliding lids on their vivs but they are fairly small. (5 and 10 gallon respectively) I have made my own tank straps with buckles for the big vivs and use a twist tie on the smaller vivs.

You sound pretty ready! Before you get the new baby home, turn on the UTH and set the thermostat at about 87°. Put the probe thermometer directly over the middle of the UTH to check for the right temp.

One of my tips is, when you get the UTH, take a piece of aluminum foil about twice the size of the UTH, peel the backing off of the UTH and stick it right to the middle of the foil. Fold the edges of the foil over the rest of the pad so it is completely wrapped. Use tape (most any tape will work) to attach it to the bottom of one end of the viv.

The sticky stuff most of them use is really strong and once you have it on your viv it is hard to remove without damaging the wires or mat. If you need to move it to a different tank or ever have to wash the whole tank with water you won't damage the UTH.

Good luck, and post pics when it is done!

thanks for the advice :) I will certainly post the pics when I get it set up, have to wait for the shipments of supplies to get here.

Will the suction cups that come with the thermometer/thermostat hold the probes in place well under the substrate or should I pick up something else to keep them down. On my frog tank atm I use 3M Commander velcro strips on the therm/hygro controller probe to attach it to the wall.

Most of the probes that come with those thermometers are crappy. I buy zip ties and sticky pad thingys from home depot to tie them onto, then cut the excess from the tie. I don't really know how to explain the sticky pieces but they are plastic with one side for the ties and then other side is square and sticky.

The suction cups work well with baby snakes, but for my bigger kids I have them weighted down with a rock. Some people use a glue gun, just make sure it is totally dry before adding aspen!

As for keeping the lid secure, I use velcro on the four corners. Also the tops I use are the heavier metal mesh ones with a tiny gap in the corner to fit over the wires.

If you haven't bought the UTH yet, Ultratherm is a REALLY great brand, and doesn't have a sticky side. You tape it where you want it with that heavy duty aluminum tape that you can buy in the heating section at Home Depot. That tape is also great for holding wires in place- it sticks once, but if it comes loose, it's done, so not very dangerous for a snake. Velcro is kind of a cool idea, though, if the direct heat from the UTH doesn't bother it. Would you stick down one piece, then lay the wire on it with the probe sticking out, and then attach the other side of the velcro, without taking off the sticky backing?

thanks, I have the glue gun and I have the same type of top, its pretty heavy steel mesh, hoping it will work until I can make a locking one from a design I found on this site while going through the DIY sub forum.

I ordered a Fluker one, they didn't have an Ultratherm in stock with the size I needed :( only larger ones, so not sure if it has a sticky back or not with it.

Not sure about the thermostat probe, its one of those Jump Start ones from Hygrofarm, but for using it with the thermometer I have, the commander strips are a no-go not enough flat space to adhere the small velcro to it without taking the chance on a sticky piece :( unless I actually just stick it to the suction cup and then velcro that to the bottom of the tank.

Here is the setup. I have a Fluker's heat mat under the one side hooked up to the Jump Start controller. Aspen/Kaytee bedding, 2 hides and a waterbowl. The probes for hot side are attached to the glass under the substrate and are still trying to get on target for heat, I may have to thin out the substrate a bit. I have a few more deco's and vines coming hopefully it won't be too cluttered.. I think I went overboard a bit lol.

Is this for an older corn or a baby? The setup seems like it would be quite big for a neonate. It looks awesome though! Make sure that lid is super secure!
