Tiny White Bugs in Substrate!!!

Cam5

New member
:awcrap:We brought home an Emperor Scorpion a few weeks ago.
Set up includes the compressed brick cocnut shredded stuff you add water to and a small piece of bark.

Tonight we saw TONS of tiny white bugs. They appear to be able to walk and jump...and appear to have about 8 legs and 2 antennae.

I sprayed them with Reptile Relief and they died...but new ones are surfacing and i do not know how much of that stuff I can safely use or the bug I am battling:awcrap:

Thanks for ANY help...

Pictures would be helpful in identifying the bug...

It sounds like the culprit could be the substrate itself, sometimes eggs get laid in compressed coconut and bed-a-beast dirt which is one of the reasons I stopped using them for the snakes.

I'd recommend cleaning the entire cage out and replacing the current bedding with new stuff. What you can do, is use boiling water to decompress the coconut stuff and just be sure to allow it to cool completely before placing the animal on it - this should kill any other eggs that are in the substrate.

And I'm really not sure how the bug spray will be for the scorpion since it's semi-related to bugs.

I wouldn't use that stuff around your scorpion.. Here's some info on the product "The active ingredients in De Flea products work together to soften the waxy exoskeleton of fleas, ticks, lice, mites, and other insects. Once the insect's armor has been penetrated, its internal organs are saturated and the insect quickly bursts. De Flea products work for all stages of an insect's life cycle, eggs, larvae, pupae and adult--effectively eliminating all insects from the home."

Hopefully it didn't get on him?

I'd get a new brick, put it in the microwave with a separate cup of water, and nuke for two minutes. That should kill all the creepy crawlies. Just make sure it doesn't explode. Don't forget the cup of water or it might catch fire.

Thanks everyone.
Can't get a pic with my camera....they are too small.
Not baby scorps though.

I did not spray him but it is in his substrate.

Going to go get him out now.
Use paper towels over night and boil the *&^%! out of some new substrate tomorrow...
Sorry so short...wanna go ge thim out:headbang:

Understandable... hope he's ok and good luck on getting rid of the other bugs.

Glad to hear he's ok! Hope you wore gloves, lol!

I wore one garden glove...(a new one)...I had to take the other one off sonce I couldn't really feel what I was doing...no 'hot' animals for me until they make smaller gloves:devil01:

He seems to be okay this morning...I am just waiting for the reptile shop to open now.

Thank you so much for your help.
