TN man dies after being bitten by a copperhead

Wow. I didn't think death from a copperhead bite was very common. Especially with a captive snake, so hopefully the people would have had an emergency plan.

I really want to know why it's so hard for journalists to get their words right... VENOMOUS. Not poisonous.

Sad for this fellow. I imagine his friend feels terrible as well.

I imagine that most people think of "venomous" and "poisonous" as pretty much the same thing. And to most people, it just doesn't matter. It's kind of like anyone with specialist interests. If you're interested, you know the differences in terminology. If you're not interested (or if the press is trying to drum up some more fear and you don't know the difference), it simply doesn't matter....

I'm horrified to say that I answered the question "How many poisonous snakes are there in Florida?" as six. It was totally out of context- had to do with a gun class. How embarassing!!!

I imagine it is similar to bee sting in that some folks have a heightened reaction.

I'd be willing to bet that he died from anaphylactic shock, not the venom itself. It's a haemotoxin, and not one that is commonly fatal. This is the first I've heard of anyone dying from a single copperhead bite. That doesn't really mean a whole lot, but, you get what I'm saying...

... "How many poisonous snakes are there in Florida?" ...

There are in fact two poisonous snakes on this planet. One located in Southeast Asia & Japan. The other poisonous species of snake is found in Florida.

Lets put the cat among the proverbial pigeons then. :noevil:

Actually, I believe that if you are unlucky enough to have a fang inject venom directly into a vein, that would prove to be fatal pretty quickly.

I lived in east ridge way back in the early 80s.

Dying from a Copperhead bite. Wow I have heard of people wishing they were dead after a copperhead bite but have never heard of someone dying.

I hate the whole poisonous / venomous thing too.
