Update: King Tula Royale(BP)

[Insert Witty Commentary]
I rescued this ballpython from a pet shop about a week ago. When I first saw him, he was in HORRIBLE condition from monthsof neglect with his previous owner. My favorite shop took him from the kid, and gave him to me. For the full story and some "before" pictures, checkout my thread "Need Advice From BP Owners..."

Anyhow...1 week and 30grams later, he is feeling much better...as am I. He has eaten 2 full weanlings for me(in less than a week :D), and is starting to more closly resemble what a BP *should* look like, though he is still agonizingly thin(he was 124grams when I brought him home, and is currently 154grams). All of his old shed is gone(finally) after some soaking and help from me, his eyes are starting to clear up from a black, cloudy iris to now they are starting to show some color and are clear, and, the best of all...he trusts me. He allows me to pick him up when I need to fix something in his cage, and no longer cowers in a tight little ball if I go near him.

I am using Eco-Earth coconut substrate to maintain high humidity levels, and he is no longer dehydrated. I also have his 2 dry hides(one hot side, one cool), and a humid hide using sphagnum moss. Since he doesn't burrow, at all, I have an unregulated UTH underneath the approximately 1 inch of coconut fiber substrate, which keeps his substrate surface temp in the low to mid-80's, and a daytime as well as a nighttime spotlight which allows him a basking temp in the low to mid 90's. I am also keeping his enclosure at a relative humidity of approximately 60-70%. So far...he seems to be quite happy with the setup, and can be seen thermoregulating at night, though he is rarely seen during the day.

Anyhow...hope you all enjoyed readingabout his progress even half as much as I am enjoying seeing it.

Thanks for Looking!!

What a wonderful result Chris... As you know I adore his name ;)

More people need to call them royal pythons... I really hate the term "ball" python :p

I'm glad he's doing so well, now. Aw, look at his little spine, though! Poor little King Tula.

Nanci

It's great he's doing so well Chris. I'm sure with your care he will bulk up in no time and we won't be seeing his spine for much longer.

I enjoyed it immensely, Chris. That guy is VERY lucky to have made his way into your care. His next home could have been as bad, or worse than his first. But he lucked out. Great job. :)

Tula--

I prefer the term "royal pyhton" to "ball python" as well, but here in the U.S., I fear that too many people would be saying "Whuttsa Royal Python?"...thus his name...

Dean--

I've no doubt that he would have been dead in a mere week or two, had I not been given the opportunity to love him. I am really glad the pet shop recognized his needs, and gave him to me. Moreover, I'm really glad I went into the shop and found him when I did...

Nanci--

Yea...his spine really is an agonizing thing to see. Makes me want to cry every time I stroke his back and feel how sharply it is poking out. But I am confident that he will gain weight quickly. If I can keep him eating 2 weanlings a week, and progress him to adult mice quickly, I'm sure he will recover. Heck, at least he isn't triangle shaped, anymore. He's starting to fill out around the ventral area already, and eating every 4 days is a good sign, at least...

Thanks, all, for the compliments and encouragement!

You haven't seen a ban in a long time, Elle, but if you keep up this crazy-talk, you may be looking at one. That there's a BALL python! And it's a baby carriage, not a pram. And it's a hood and trunk, not a bonnet and boot. :grin01:

Eek! You're playing hard-ball. I forgot about the "M" word...

Luvleh Royal Chris 'as, eh lassie? ;)

Thanks for the update Chris. He looks great, it's lovely to hear he's doing so well. Please keep the updates coming!

Btw... I'm with Elle on the royal thing (of course!)... it does annoy me when pet shops in this country sell "ball pythons." Lol. :grin01:

I only wish my new baby BP were doing so well. 3 weeks now and she still doesn't really budge out of a tightly curled ball,

Great progress already, and just such a funky name that he's bound to do well! (Oh, that's funky as in cool and hip, btw :) )

It really amazes me how easy it is to provide proper care, and how few people actually do it. And, as is aparrent from this guy's progress, they can really thrive when properly cared for.

The only down side is...there is one advertised for sale in the local paper today. Another Royal Python, for $80 with cage and "everything you need"...I might have to give the guy a call and check it out...

I hate to expose myself as the family embarrassment, but it turns out I'm a mutt of half Scot heritage. I took a trip there a while ago, and was offered a turn at "throwing" the baby...I'm not welcome back...
"throw",+ "chip buddy", + "toad in the hole" = learn to speak "American!" :sidestep:

Chris, you can't save them all. The classifieds are flooded with roylas here just now, mainly because of the breeding season and the adults have done their jobs.

My advice, stay away from unwanted royals if you ever intend to breed (which you WILL after you have a few). Nobody will ever want normal lone normal males.

I am addicted to craigs list and there are an extraordinary number of red tail boas that are being gotten rid of. Second to that are ball pythons. Do you think it is because of the breeding season or just that these animals are all gotten rid of after they have grown to be fat and over 3 feet long and people dont want them as much once they have gotten bigger?

Also, once again, this post makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside
 I really want to have a ball python or rosy boa some day when I am not living with four of them (And I am the one who keeps one of the girls from doing everything wrong...) owned by other people and I have more room! I currently have all my pets in one room since I live in a co-op. Hummm also have to consider that the boyfriend is going to get a hog nose as soon as he finds out where he is living next year and then if we move in together later I will have a hog nose too...
