Using both a UTH & Light

Good morning everyone!

Last night was the first night with my Miami corn snake. During the day yesterday I had my UTH plugged in and also a light plugged in to bring the temperature (in the hot hide, using a digital probe) to 84 degrees. I turned off the light for the night, which brought the temp. in the hot hide down to 79 degrees.

Is this normal that I need both to have the temperature above 80? When I touch the glass above the UTH it doesn't feel warm.

Thanks for the help!

Ben:cheers:

The glass over the UTH won't feel warm to you because your skin temp is 91F. How and where exactly are you measuring the temp? Do you have a thermostat? What brand of UTH are you using?

Hey Nanci,

I dont have a thermostat set up to the UTH, it is an exo terra which came attached to the tank. I have the temperature probe laying on top of the substrate in the hide.

Thanks!

You need to measure the temp directly over the UTH, in the center of it, under the substrate.

With the probe on the glass, under the substrate I'm getting readings of 95 - 97 degrees, which I know is too hot, correct? Should I lay down some newspaper between the glass & substrate?

The snake can crawl down to the glass no matter what you put on it, which is why you need a thermostat. If you absolutely can't find one, or make a rheostat, or use a lamp dimmer, then you can put a piece of ceramic tile over the UTH, in the viv, and see what that does to the temp.

Okay great, the nearest pet store is 2 hours way, so for now I'm going to buy a light dimmer and see how that works.

Thanks!

I noticed you're in Canada, so I figured I'd chime in and possibly save you a long trip to the pet store.

When I was trying to find a thermostat, I went to various pet stores, Canadian tire and home depot and could not find an appropriate thermostat anywhere, I ended up having to buy one from here (<- link). It works well, though, definitely worth it to keep from getting a fried snake :)

Great thanks! I think I will order one of those, just waiting to see if the lamp dimmer works, have it set to the lowest setting, just waiting for the temperature to change on my thermometer.

The difference between a thermostat and a lamp dimmer is you have to continually monitor the temps, using a lamp dimmer, because it doesn't alter the power supply when your room temp drops, daily or seasonally. A thermostat does.
